The Dundee Hills are located in a largely south-facing somewhat circular pattern about 40 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Protected from coastal winds and from weather coming out of the north, the Dundee Hills are surprisingly warm in relation to adjacent areas during the summer and early fall. These hills are the result of the Pacific Rim’s Ring of Fire and the soil is a lava-based soil containing silt, loam and clay. The result is a dense, ultra- rich soil that with even minimal oversight supports healthy vegetative growth. In the hands of professional vineyard managers, the soil allows vineyards to flourish and the fruit to take on the richness the land has to offer.

The one barrel Volcanic bottling takes wine from select barrels of our four Dundee Hill vineyard sites to show off what we consider to be the best, most positive and powerful traits that this appellation has to offer. The Dundee Hills’ Pinot Noirs are about richness, sweet fruit, soft tannins and opulence. This wine will show the sublime sweetness of Balcombe Vineyard, the powerfully intense qualities of the Mysterious Vineyard and the silky elegance and complexity of Ana Vineyard. This is sweetly fruited, sublimely textured Pinot with a long, supple finish and incredible texture from beginning to end. Certainly, this is a bit of a geeky exercise in winemaking but for those interested in the nature of terroir it’s a pretty cool one. - the winery
