Review:

The nose is expressive and hints at the density in the mouth. I like the blueberry and blackberry characters that meld with the espresso and wood spice aromatics. The tannins are apparent, yet polished and pleasing. - the winery

2009 Vintage Tasting Notes

2009 Wine Spectator - 91 points - Velvety, with a nice lift to the dense, tarry flavors of black currant and smoke, finishing on a toasty note. Offers taut structure and ripeness, without excess weight. Drink now through 2017. - H.S.

Now that the post-Sideways backlash against Merlot has subsided, we can again rejoice in one of Washington's standout grape varietals, made by a Merlot master. Using primarily old-vine vineyards, John made bold 09 Merlot that sings right out of the bottle. Dark cherries, sweet boysenberries, a touch of cinnamon pipe tobacco and oak come together on a powerful mid-palate. It retains a brightness, almost glowing in the glass. - Marcus

While John Abbot, owner and winemaker at Abeja, is best known for his Cabernet. Not as well recognized, but very popular and highly scored was the Merlot he made for Canoe Ridge Winery (1994-2002) before he founded Abeja. Both wines contributed to his status as a "rising star" in the Washington wine community.

Abeja is one of those wineries that sells all of their wine to customers who have followed them for years. Every year a growing number of our customers buy the Abeja Merlot as their personal "House Red", when the wines are released.

"The proof is in the pudding" as my grandfather always said. He liked wine and pudding, and I am pretty sure this Merlot would have met with great approval from him. The nose is expressive and hints at the density in the mouth. I like the blueberry and blackberry characters that meld with the espresso and wood spice aromatics. The tannins are apparent, yet polished and pleasing. This is a wine that will age well and can easily be paired with many different cuisines.

I recommend thinking of food pairings outside the box. I like one-pot cooking, as you can feed a crowd and clean up easily. Try chipotle roasted chicken with potatoes, short rib stew, or sloppy joes. Merlot can even cross over into seafood. A gently spiced paella would be delicious, especially during the cooler months.

I made some eighties music recommendations with our last Merlot and they were well received, so I will stay in the same vein. Try the Talking Heads album, Little Creatures, and Message in a Bottle by The Police. Ooh La La by The Faces and Close to Me by The Cure would also be excellent choices. - John Abbot

This classic varietal is perfectly suited for special growing areas of Washington State, and while it blends beautifully with Cabernet Sauvignon, it has the quality and character to stand firmly on its own. It is a pure, lush, classic Merlot with a special intensity that comes with Washington State fruit.

2005 Vintage Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 89 points: "The 2005 Merlot is dark ruby-colored with a nose of pain grille, cassis, and red currants. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with flavors of spicy black cherry and other red fruits. It has good balance but is slightly compact in the finish. Drink this tasty Merlot over the next 10 years."
