We're standing by last year's provocative statement: we'd rather drink the Andrew Will Sorella than the Quilceda Creek Cab. Besides the obvious $50 saved for each bottle, the Sorella is powerful and refined. The two wines share the same fruit pedigree - Washington's Champoux Vineyard. The heart of the Sorella (like the QC Cab) is Cabernet Sauvignon from vines planted in the early 70's.

 

This is the pinnacle of Washington wine.

Huge scents of black fruits, espresso, and whiffs of vanilla-tinged woodsmoke give way to layers of black cherries, black currants, and super-dark blueberries. The 06 Sorella is at once supple and structured, and really begins to shine with a couple hours of decanting. The finish is exceptionally long, with sweet licorice, minerals, and baking spices adding to the stunning fruit. - Avalon

 

"The promise, complex fruit, and mineral qualities already apparent in this wine are easily seen after the wine has been open for a few hours. Most of my wines show much better after they have been open for four to eight hours. This wine is no exception. My partner in the Two Blondes Vineyard, who knows my wines better than I, says this is the best wine made at Andrew Will, and while I don't put much belief in the idea of a "best" wine, I am very happy with the path this wine is taking. We like it now but think 4 to 25 years in the cellar."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 94 points: "The 2006 Sorella, produced from Block 1 of the Champoux Vineyard, is the winery flagship. Saturated purple in color, the perfume is a complex amalgam of pain grille, scorched earth, espresso, black currant, blackberry, and licorice. This leads to a supple-textured wine with layers of ripe fruit, outstanding depth and concentration, considerable elegance, and a long, pure finish. It will evolve for 8-10 years and provide pleasure through 2030."

Avalon tasting notes: Wow Wow Wow! This wine floored us. Powerful but not overpowering, the 03 Syrah has light smoke, scorched earth, toffee, and anise notes on the nose. An initial wave of pure blackberry, and black cherry shifts to juicy plums on the middle and finish. There's a creamy element that enhances the staying power of the finish. A unamimous Avalon choice for one of the top Washington Syrahs.

Wine Spectator 93 points: "Rich, ripe and bright. An effusive mouthful of blackberry, red plum and dusky spice flavors, emphasizing the pretty fruit but not without hinting at white pepper and star anise as the finish picks up steam. A big wine, but this doesn't feel at all heavy. Drink now through 2014. 284 cases made." -HS

The 2006 Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard Red is absolutely classic Champoux. Seductive, pure aromas of ripe blackberries resonate with nuances of cocoa and smoke. At once dense and supple, the first burst of fruit expands and the layers of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, and cassis unfold. The unstoppable Champoux fruit keeps shining through the finish, while a ribbon of savory blueberry syrup dances with nutmeg, sage leaf, and earth.

Andrew Will wines are a study in integrated oak. The 2006 Champoux shows excellent fruit structure and balance and will evolve over the next decade or more. Having recently tasted a vertical of Will Champoux from 2002 through 2005, I can attest to the rewards of buying Champoux for your cellar.

Ciel du Cheval Red 05 or 06

We have both 2005 and 2006 vintages of the Ciel du Cheval available.

2005 Andrew Will Ciel Du Cheval Red received 93 points from Wine Advocate (Parker) 7/08. They said: "The 2005 Ciel du Cheval is composed of 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc,14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. It offers up darker black fruit aromas and flavors with significantly more structure, grip, and power. It exhibits layers of spicy black fruits which should become increasingly opulent and glossy as it develops in the bottle. Give it a minimum of 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it through 2030."

2006 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Red was held back from its usual release date in the early fall. It is now showing the startling balance and beautiful austerity which are the hallmarks of the Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. Every year, Chris Camarda receives perfectly ripe Merlot and Cabernet Franc from this warmer Cabernet site.
