Arterberry Maresh Winery

2009 World Release!

For Jim, it's all about when you pick. He rolled the dice in 2008 and let some of the old vine fruit hang until Halloween - remarkably late for Oregon. With the warmer 2009 vintage, Jim picked early for balance and restraint. "I pick at the right time - its my most important decision," say Jim. "In 2009, there was no rain and no curve balls. The choice was yours, it was simple, really."

Jim likens his 2009 vintage to 2002.

The Wines -
Three New Pinots, Two New Chardonnays

Arterberry Maresh
Maresh Vineyard
Pinot noir 09 $54.95

$49.45
in any 12 bottle order

The flagship Pinot noir, Jim's Maresh Vineyard Pinot is his chance to show off his family's hard work in planting one of the oldest, and best, vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Old Vine Pommard and Wadenswil clone Pinot, from the original 1970 plantings, provides the frame for this gorgeous Pinot.

In the riper 2009 vintage, Jim picked and blended for balance and elegance and there's no stopping the sexy pie cherry and strawberry scents and flavors. The impeccable Pinot sweetness hangs on from the middle of your palate through a minute past the finish, resonating with dark berry, brown spices, orange essence and mineral thread. Seamless as always.

About the lower price, Jim says, "Now that there's more wine, I can lower the price and give people a better deal." As if we needed another reason.

Chardonnay 09 $74.95

Jim's favorite wine is his Maresh Vineyard Chardonnay - if you don't know his Chard, you don't know Jim. This is a "full circle" wine; Jim's Mom Martha was pregnant with him when she planted the Chardonnay vines that would turn into her son's favorite.

One of a kind. Smelling it is like sticking your head into a bowl of sun-ripened pears, then starting to mix in Meyers lemons, a couple slices of fresh-cut pineapple, and a mixed handful of stones and seashells. A phenomenal texture - more like a red wine than a white - is supported by a wallop of acidity. Jim doesn't filter or fine his Chardonnays, a rarity among Oregon white wines. Left alone for 14 months in 25% new oak, which melds nicely and will continue to integrate with years in the cellar.

At 12.8% alcohol, you should expect this to age for over a decade.

From the high-elevation, top of the hill, non-irrigated 108 clone Chardonnay vines.

Arterberry Maresh
Juliard Vineyard
Pinot noir 09 $49.95

$44.95

This one's coming on strong! Much more elegant and, dare I say better than Jim's 2008 Juliard, still showcasing "the darker side" of Arterberry Maresh Pinots. Juliard's signature darker fruit, game and earth meets a riper, silkier Pinot - yeah, it's better than 08. A better part of the vineyard, less new wood, more fruit sweetness, a more balanced overall wine.

All Pommard clone Pinot, mostly from 1988 plantings with a few 1976. Only 75 cases made.

Arterberry Maresh
Dundee Hills
Pinot noir 09 $24.95

$22.45
in any 12 bottle order

Amazing value. Let me explain: you take some 1970-planted Maresh Vineyard Pommard and add in more Maresh Pinot, plus fruit from the esteemed Juliard and Winderlea Vineyards and put it in a bottle for under $25. Yep, Jim declassified some of his best fruit because it was a little "bigger" than he likes for the Maresh. Lucky us, since that makes his Dundee Hills packed with flavor, slightly spicy red fruit brimming out of the glass. At 13.8%, I wouldn't exactly call this "big," but I would call it smoking good.

100% Maresh Vineyard, from a lower section of Dijon clone Chardonnay planted in 1991. Just like his ultra-Chard, the Dundee Hills is made simply: this is vineyard to bottle with no additions, stirring, filtering, etc. Aged for 14 months in twice-filled barrels.

Jim describes this Chard as "straight gluttony" which is true from the standpoint that you can sit down, start sipping and find yourself at the end of a bottle right quick - the lemon meringue, pear and nuttiness calling out to you. But this Chard has complexity, freshness and balance, too. Oh, and it's under $25. 98 cases made.
