Review: Only 60 cases produced. I haven't used the term "Burgundian" in an Oregon Pinot tasting note in years, but I'm ready to. Red fruit and pomegranate high notes are matched by underlying earthy dark notes and dusty rose petals. There's a really cool sweet/salty interplay towards the finish with delicate dried herbs. I recommend cellaring for 1-2 years, or decanting before drinking. - Marcus 2010 Wine Advocate - 92 points - The Arterberry Maresh 2010 Pinot Noir Gehrts Vineyard hails from a parcel adjoining Domaine Drouhin and owned by Richard Gehrts, whom Maresh "citing him as an early employer and career influence" insists "may be the hardest working person in the Oregon wine industry, because all day long he's out there in the vineyard doing all the hard work himself, farm(ing) it immaculately, and at night he cooks" at his local institution, Red Hills Provencal Dining (boasting, incidentally, a modestly-priced cellar deep in mature Piemontese and German gems.) Already at first whiff, it's evident that this particular Pinot is a very different animal from the Winderlea - and I use the word "animal" advisedly. Imagine dark berry juices and marrow-rich beef stock with a stony undertone - I'm actually put a bit in mind of a great Moulin-a-Vent - without the high-toned, distilled fruit aspect prominent in most of Marsh's wines I tasted. Firm, bright, penetrating and deeply-layered, this is going to want a half dozen or so years in bottle and I suspect will hold up well for at least twice that long. - David Schildknecht The Gehrts is made from the minuscule 2010 vintage, and the quality of the fruit is exceptional. By necessity, a tiny amount of the Gehrts was made. It is a complex and highly individual single vineyard wine. Jim's sense of terroir shows clearly here. The Gehrts Vineyard is farmed and managed by Richard and Nancy Gehrts, owners and chefs of the Red Hills Provincial Dining Room restaurant in Dundee. Cameron Winery's John Paul helped them plant the vineyard a little over ten years ago. 2007 Vintage Tasting Notes One barrel. 26 months. Captivating wine. Dark and brooding, this Pinot that slept in a twice-filled barrel for over two years exudes warm spices like clove, allspice, and cinnamon. With lots of intensity and concentration, this seamless beauty displays dark cherry and berry flavors that just don't quit. A truly unique Pinot that has to be tasted. - Marcus |
