Arterberry Maresh Pinot noir Juliard Vineyard 2010

We have a one-barrel exclusive for you. It is the first 2010 Arterberry Maresh Pinot noir, from Juliard Vineyard. And it is a story of scarcity. Normal yields for Oregon Pinot noir are around 2 tons per acre. In 2010, Jim Maresh got 0.5 tons from 3 acres of Juliard. Ouch! That's where the pain ends and the gain begins - Jim Maresh offered us the barrel exclusively for our customers. That's only 25 cases total.

The 2010 Juliard is vivid and energetically aromatic, with citrus-accented sweet red fruit picking up rose and mineral notes. Each sip unveils another layer of depth - this young Pinot is still coming to life. A mixture of red cherries and berries has a darker element fanning out towards the finish, adding savory dried herbs.

The 2010 Juliard puts on weight as it breathes and will put on weight in your cellar. The best 2010s are destined for a long life, with serious aging potential. I recommend cellaring it for at least 3 years. 12.8% alcohol. From non-irrigated vines, unfined and unfiltered. Juliard Vineyard is just down the road from Maresh Vineyard, in Oregon's Dundee Hills.

Half of the barrel will go to our Reserve Pinot Noir Club members, making this even more scarce. Please place your orders soon!

About the Juliard VIneyard

The Juliard Vineyard was named by blending the names of owners Julia (Staigers) and Gerard (Koschal) shortly after they purchased an old, 10 acre site with fruit trees, a house, a shed, and 4.5 acres of miscellaneous grapes. They meticulously and arduously selected vines and replanted the entire vineyard. The result is a vineyard held in high esteem by several Oregon winemakers, Jim Maresh included.

2009 Vintage Tasting Notes

This one's coming on strong! Much more elegant and, dare I say better than Jim's 2008 Juliard, still showcasing "the darker side" of Arterberry Maresh Pinots. Juliard's signature darker fruit, game and earth meets a riper, silkier Pinot - yeah, it's better than 08. A better part of the vineyard, less new wood, more fruit sweetness, a more balanced overall wine. All Pommard clone Pinot, mostly from 1988 plantings with a few 1976. Only 75 cases made. - Marcus

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

The darker side of Arterberry Maresh Pinot, the Juliard is bursting with dark fruit goodness. The complex nose stirs up anise, smoked meat, black plum and slate. Up to this point, you expect a wallop on the palate but that's not the Arterberry Maresh style. Pure elegance coexists with the dark and savory counterpoint to the Maresh Vineyard. While the tannins are more present, the Juliard has the trademark silkiness of A-M Pinots. I followed this wine in barrel for over a year and can honestly say that the bottled Juliard exceeds my expectations. Only 128 cases made. - Marcus

2008 Vintage Wine Advocate - 93 points - The 2008 Pinot Noir Juliard Vineyard comes from a vintage Maresh describes as "? a superior 1999." This 5 barrel cuvee (with one new cask) is dark ruby-colored with an alluring bouquet of lavender, savory spices, smoke, black cherry, and black raspberry. Dense, structured, and packed on the palate but with only 13.4% alcohol, it is keeping plenty in reserve. It will benefit from 4-6 years of additional cellaring and will offer a drinking window extending through 2023. - Jay Miller

Jim sure picked the right vintage for his first release of a Juliard Vineyard designate. Juliard Vineyard is only a quarter-mile from Maresh Vineyard. Jim uses a chunk of the older Pommard vines along with newer plantings.

The 2008 Juliard was reviewed on Erobertparker.com and Wineberserkers.com. DJ said:"Had the opportunity to taste this wine with the winemaker. Popped and poured."

"For those of you that are fans of the Oregon Dundee Hills and the Maresh bottlings, this will be a departure in style, sort of. Jim Maresh describes this a "masculine" wine and, relative to the other bottlings, he is correct. This wine is bigger and more full bodied than what he has made in the past. It gives you a bunch of dark ripe plum, baking spice, cinnamon, and raspberry aromas. The palate follows with more spice, rich bing and black cherry, good acid, fine tannins, and impeccable balance. He may describe it as masculine, but this wine will not be mistaken for a syrah. It is pure pinot, and pure elegance."
