Oregon's Italian Connection

Barbera - What We're Drinking

Two with Italy's Highest Wine Honor

Avalon Wine

Winelovers in Oregon have one of the best selections of small, artisan made Italian wines in the country. While Avalon's focus is Oregon and Washington wines, we have a deep appreciation for Italian wine.

Northern Italy's Piemonte region is know for the epic wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, and rightfully so. Those wines can take years, decades even, to reach their peak and drink beautifully. What to drink while you're waiting? Barbera!

Barbera grows in the same neighborhood and can produce many different styles, from light and fruity to bold and tannic. We love Barbera for how food-friendly, versatile, and just plain awesome it is. Try it with burgers, have it with a cheese plate. These Barberas range from smooth and silky to massive and rich. We included a couple limited wines that have received Italy's highest wine honor: Three Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) from Gambero Rosso, the Italian Wine Bible.

The signifiance of Gambero Rosso's Three Glasses rating cannot be overstated; the selection process is rigorous, involving blind tastings of around 25,000 wines. A tiny fraction are selected for the Three Glasses taste offs. In the 2007 Guide only 282 received Three Glasses - one was the Deltetto Barbera Rocca delle Marasche 04. In 2008, 305 wines got Three glasses, one being the Marchesi Alfiera Barbera 05. Exceptional is an understatement.

Marchesi Alfiera
Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Alfiera" 05
Three Glasses from Italy's Gambero Rosso:

"The nose on the Alfiera, aged 15 months in barrique, ranges from crushed flowers to plum before opening to mint and sweet spices. Its palate is warm and structured, and finishes long. This wine of wonderful complexity brought a new Three Glasses award to the estate, which has made Barbera its trademark.

Wow - this is a Barbera that could stand next to any world class red. Super-refined.

Cascina Corte
Barbera Piemonte 06

Loads of cherry, blackberry, and leather play with earth and minerals on the nose. The palate stays true to the aromas with a surprisingly lush fruitiness, balanced by zippy acidity. The Cascina Corte's long finish belies the price.

Barbera d'Alba 2006

Rich, dark, and chocolaty. Its big blue and purple fruit is deep and long, with dark cherry and floral accents. Deltetto is a Barbera specialist. An exceptional table wine that's equally at home with grilled sausages as it is as a sipper.

Barbera d'Alba
Rocca delle Marasche 04
Three Glasses from Italy's Gambero Rosso:

"Barbera Rocca delle Marasche 2004, from fruit harvested slightly later than usual, shot through to the finals where its monumental nose and magisterial combination of acidity, fruit and alcohol stunned the judges. Three Glasses was the verdict."

Only available as part of Avalon's Barbera sampler. Heftier and lengthier than their basic Barbera d'Alba, the Rocca delle Marasche unfurls scads of black, red and blue fruit flavors. Aging in French oak creates a modern-styled gem.

Barolo Bricco Boschis 03

This is the rare young Barolo
that is ready to drink now.

Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 03 received 92 points from Wine Spectator: "Displays fresh plum and berry aromas, with undertones of mineral and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with refined tannins and a long finish. A solid wine for the vintage. Best after 2011. 1,580 cases made."

Podere Ruggeri Corsini
Barolo 04

Seductive aromas of licorice, red berries, rose petals, spice, and resin. The scents from a glass of Barolo are hypnotic and ethereal--there are few wines like it. Maybe the best thing is realizing the aromatics will only improve with time.

The palate offers loads of macerated cherry and blueberry that sweetens on the finish, picking up blackberry, then mingling with cedary spice and subtle dark coca on the structured yet refined finish. This is outstanding value Barolo that will provide years of enjoyment in the cellar--you could buy a case and drink a bottle each year for the next twelve and find an evolving masterpiece. Best to have this with food for near term drinking, like hearty meat dishes (braised short ribs would be perfect), from a decanter.
