Belle Pente Pinot noir Belle Pente Vineyard 03: From the winery: "The 2002 vintage of this wine made quite a splash in it's debut vintage: complimentary reviews from a wide range of critics, a top 5 (out of 50) finish in a recent Wall Street Journal tasting of Oregon Pinots, and most importantly a terrific response from our customers!

This 2003 version promises great things as well. It is the bass to the Murto's treble, the dark side of Pinot Noir. Essentially a "little brother" to our flagship Estate Reserve, it sees less new oak and shows more forward fruit.

The grapes used in this wine come primarily from 3 young blocks on the east slope of our hill planted in 1998. Harvest in these sections began on September 15th, about 10 days ahead of normal, and concluded two weeks later. The staggered harvest enabled us to pick at relatively moderate sugar levels, and the finished wine actually came in a hair under 14% alcohol (a rare attribute for a top-shelf 2003 Oregon Pinot!).

Deep dark fruit flavors and aromas are backed up with firm ripe tannins and good acid balance. Very attractive today, it will only get better with some time in the cellar.

Tasting notes and reviews for 2002 vintage:

Wine Spectator rating 91 points for 2002 vintage: "Lithe in texture, explosive in flavor, bursting with blackberry, plum, and currant, sending off sparks of pepper, violet and cinnamon as it all cruises through a sleek finish. Drink now through 2012." H.S.

From the winery: "The bulk of the grapes (80%) come from 3 Pinot Noir blocks planted in 1998, with a smattering of older and younger vines. Individual lots were selected for their overall quality and varietal correctness, as well as for their approachability in the near term. The resulting blend has a very moderate 20% new oak and displays deep, dark red & black fruits on the nose and palate with good complexity and concentration. Designed for earlier enjoyment than our Estate Reserve, it still has ample structure for mid-term aging. This wine will be a key part of our line-up from now into the future."
