Bob Betz - The Master of Washington Syrah

Avalon Wine

To say that Bob Betz knows wine is to say that Tiger Woods knows golf. Betz holds the title "Master of Wine." While that title is official, granted to him by the Institute of Masters of Wine after passing their rigorous tests, we're ready to bestow him with another title after tasting his 2007 Syrahs: Master of Washington Syrah.

The reviews for Bob Betz's Syrahs keep getting better with each vintage. His mailing list is closed. The 2007 Syrahs are, without question, Bob's finest Syrahs. If you like Syrah, you need to taste these masterful wines.

Betz Family Winery
La Cote Rousse Syrah 07
$59.95 or $53.95 by the case

(mixed cases OK)

The showstopper. Richer, fatter, and more accessible aromas and flavors than the La Serenne - a more "typical" profile of Washington Syrah. But there's nothing typical about La Cote Rousse, because it trumps the competition with fantastically rich black cherry, raspberry, and plum plus bacon, licorice and purple flowers. The finish hangs on forever, adding sweet thyme and lavender. - Marcus

From the winery:
The only one of our three Syrahs to come from two separate vineyards, sited about a mile from each other on Red Mountain. Three French clones and the classic "Phelps" clone combine in a multi-layered expression of fruit, dried herbs and earth. The French clones are grown at Ciel du Cheval while the Phelps comes from Scott Williams' "ranch at the end of the road".

La Serenne Syrah 07
$59.95 or $53.95 by the case

(mixed cases OK)

Dark, dense and massive. The 07 La Serenne is as good as ANY Washington Syrah I've tasted. Buckets full of black fruit are shaded with ground coffee, vanilla and smoked meat. La Serenne storms your palate before a sexy, savory-sweet interplay of blackberries, thyme, pepper and minerals lifts the finish. The 07 was still evolving after three days opened. Shockingly good Syrah. - Marcus

From the winery:
Once again, the Boushey Vineyard hit the mark. Our La Serenne has been one of the most consistently awarded and acclaimed wine we make, and it is 100% from Dick Boushey's vineyard. We have rows designated to our Syrah in a spot where the soils thin out and don't produce a large crop. The grapes are small, thick skinned and loaded with flavor. .

Grenache Besoleil 07
$49.95 or $44.95 by the case

(mixed cases OK)

Betz Besoleil 07 smells great - meaty raspberries with notes of Chambord and strawberries adding flecks of black pepper. With some time in the glass, the mouthfeel expands and delicious finish of sweet grilled herbs, white pepper and brambly berries pops.

80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah makes up the 2007 - a prime example of a Chateauneuf du Pape-style blend from Washington. - Marcus

From the winery:
As our state's Grenache vines age the fruit they bear gains more varietal purity. And with every vintage we're raising the concentration of Grenache in Bésoleil in our attempt to create a classic southern Rhone blend. A new source of Grenache, from the Olsen Estates in the Yakima Valley brought greater vibrancy to the blend. And yes, there are notes of that elusive "garrigue", the earthy, dried herb-lavender note typical of these southern Rhone blends. - the winery
