MORE INFORMATIONWatch this winery! Athena and Stewart's ability to find great fruit and make exceptional wines with enthusiasm and skill brought 90+ ratings to their 2005 Pinot noirs from Wine Spectator and other wine publications. Boedecker was first based at the Carlton Winemakers Cellar, a multiple winery facility for startups. In late 2008, Stewart and Athena opened their urban winery in a warehouse in Portland. Boedecker wines are crafted from purchased grapes - the winery does not yet own vineyard property. Athena and Stewart make wine with grapes from primarily younger vines of Dijon clone Pinot noir - grapes available to up and coming winemakers. Their winemaking skills bring the best out of these good grapes, creating balanced, multifaceted Pinot noirs. With more customers than grapes, vineyard owners offer Boedecker their fruit, knowing the wines produced will reflect well on and increase the value of their vineyards.
The first vintage of Boedecker wines was made in 2003. A second label, Pappas, was introduced with the 2004 vintage. Pappas wines are lower in price, and are made using the wine that does not fit into the Boedecker blends. Two Pinot noirs blended from several vineyards and five single vineyard Pinot noirs are made from each vintage. The two blended Pinot noirs reflect the winemaking styles of Athena and Stewart. Each blend shows their particular "take" on Oregon wine. The Boedecker "Stewart" Pinot noir, named for its winemaker, Stewart Boedecker, is called "classically Oregon" and usually has red fruit, bramble, and gentle spice flavors. The "Athena" Pinot noir, named for its winemaker, Athena Pappas, is called "new world" and is typically black fruit, cola, vanilla, and candied cherry in character. |
