Ah memories. This was one of the first wines I tasted after starting at Avalon and further cemented my adoration of Oregon Pinot. After re-tasting and reading through my original note from last year, I was pleasantly surprised at how much the wine had integrated. The caramel notes that I totally dug have really started to roll. I'm not saying you should drink all of these right now, but pulling a bottle soon would be a fun sneak peek of the 08 Oregon goodness to come from cellaring. Made by Ken Wright from the oldest Pommard section of Carter Vineyard.- Andy

The nose is rich with ripe black raspberry, cherry, hints of violets, caramel coffee, spice, and an underlay of forest floor freshness. In the mouth, black cherries burst through, backed up by toast and a long, smooth, velvet finish. - Jean

Growing conditions in 2008 were excellent. Bud break was about two weeks late, and was followed by very moderate temperatures through most of the rest of the summer. Fruit set was good and, unlike some years, the berries and clusters were both evenly and moderately sized. Nature made up for the two week delay in bud break by providing a lovely long spell of warm, dry weather in October, allowing for wonderful flavor development and acid balance. We had the luxury of a leisurely harvest and picked the grapes exactly when we wanted - October 17 at 24.9 degrees Brix, with a pH of 3.32. - the winery

Carter Vineyard lies in the Willamette Valley's Eola Hills, on the 45th parallel directly west of Salem, Oregon. To the west across the coastal mountains lies the Pacific Ocean, and to the east the Cascade Mountains. A small arm of the Eola Hills ridge reaches southwest into Polk County, terminating in a knoll that commands a sweeping view southward of the valley. The Willamette Valley vineyard is a 30 acre plot of land that fully occupies the knoll.

2006 Vintage Tasting Notes

The Carter Vineyard Pinot noir Hillblock 06 received 92 points from Wine Spectator: "The 2006 Pinot Noir Hillblock was made by Ken Wright from a vineyard planted in 1983. Wright also makes a Carter Vineyard designate under his own label which I found to be equally uplifting. The Hillblock was aged in 70% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Cherry red in color, it has a superb perfume of pain grille, spice box, red and black cherry and black raspberry. This is followed by a layered, velvety-textured, succulent wine with great depth, concentration and structure for this vintage. It will evolve for 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2010 to 2018."

Carter Vineyard Pinot noir 2006 is rich and forward. Lush flavors of black cherries are framed by a silky texture. Earth, spice, and fruit hang on through the finish. The Carter Hillblock will delight from day one. Ken Wright crafts this gem from 25 year old Pommard vines.
