Review:

There are only two drummers/Rush fans in the Oregon wine industry, that I know of: Tyson Crowley and me. Am I therefore predisposed to liking his wines? Maybe. But we'll talk about that another time. That the rest of the world has discovered Crowley is fantastic, the rest of the world meaning a relative handful of wine lovers who keep an eye on Oregon happenings. Crowley is still an "insider" winery, and their newest single-vineyard Pinot noir, from twenty year-old vineyard in the Chehalem Mountain AVA called Laurel Hood, exemplifies it. Only five barrels (125 cases) were made. It's sublime Pinot, with aromatics that lift out of the glass and invade your senses (a friendly invasion, like if a big group of intergalactic beings landed on Earth with the sole purpose of handing you a salted caramel ice cream cone anytime you wanted one). We were mesmerized with our first smell/taste of this wine at the Deep Roots Coalition tasting in spring - it was a standout. That's a special compliment given the "competition," wineries ranging from Beaux Freres to Cameron, J. Christopher to Westrey.

Crowley began working with Laurel Hood fruit in the 2011 vintage, beginning with the Wadenswil Pinot Noir. Realizing how special this vineyard was Tyson approached Laurel (the two first met in 1995 while working for Erath) about farming the property exclusively in 2012 and retaining all fruit proceeds. It is of exceptional pedigree and offers a counterpoint to the primarily Dundee Hills holdings of Crowley, thus making it an exciting high quality offering. Crowley is now in its 3rd year working with the site and are very fortunate to have Laurel Hood in the brand. - Marcus

We are so excited about this wine, the first Crowley wine from the Laurel Hood Vineyard, a lovely old vine Chehalem Mountains property that Tyson is farming himself.

Laurel Hood Vineyard was planted in 1991 to Pommard clone Pinot Noir (1.7 acres), Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir (1.1 acres) and Pinot Gris (.5 acres). The vines are own rooted and dry farmed in keeping with the standards of the Deep Roots Coalition.
