A distinctive dried cherry note found in the Dusky Goose wines and Lynn Penner-Ash's Goldschmidt Pinots is present in the Crumbled Rock Pinot as well. There's a similar spicy/dusty note in the finish. At under $30, this wine is an excellent value.
This wine has a beautiful garnet color and a nose of cherry, berries and vanilla. With a fruity underlying taste, the wine has overtones of spice leaving a silky mouth feel. - the winery
The 2007 is the initial release by Crumbled Rock. The grapes used were grown at Juliard Vineyard. A mixture of grapes from younger vines (PN 115 on 101-14) and older own-rooted Pommard were blended to produce this vintage.
Since the late 1980's, Juliard Vineyard fruit has been purchased almost exclusively by Erath Winery. Erath made a $50+ Juliard Vineyard designate Pinot noir for many years, and the wines received many high ratings.
Erath was acquired by Stimson Wine Estates in 2005, and the Juliard Vineyard fruit has passed back to the owners, who have founded their own winery, Crumbled Rock.
Owners Julia Staigers and Gerard Koschal purchased the vineyard and adjacent home in 1987 and expanded the property. Today, the vineyard is approximately 8 acres of Pinot noir and a small block of old vine Riesling.
The “Crumbled Rock” name refers to the hillside Jory soil and underlying deeply weathered crumbled rock which is a perfect medium for growing pinot noir wine grapes. The soil retains sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through dry summers without the need for irrigation, yet stresses the vines to develop the distinctive Red Hills flavor.
Gerry is a geologist, and the Crumble Rock label design is based on the old United States Geological Survey (USGS) Geologic Folio Series published in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
