Crumbled Rock is one of those "Insider" gems of a winery we love to find. You do not want to miss this quietly "under the radar"Oregon treasure. Owners Julia Staigers and Gerald Koschal's Juliard Vineyard sits at the entrance to what we call the Willamette Valley's Gold Coast of vineyards. Standing in Juliard Vineyard, you can practically throw a rock and hit Maresh, Rambouillet (Dusky Goose), Winderlea, Arcus, Clos Electrique (Cameron), Bergstrom and several other prized vineyards (okay, with a really good arm.) Planted in 1987, the Juliard Vineyard's Pinot noir fruit was sold for many years to Erath, with great success for Erath's wine ratings. When Erath was acquired by Chateau Ste. Michelle in 2006, Julia and Gerald took back the grapes and founded their own winery, Crumbled Rock. Crumbled Rock's wines impressed us from the first bottle. Both Pinots are under $35, some of the best prices for Dundee appellation wines. Julia and Gerard continue to sell grapes to a few of Oregon's best wineries. Some of the wineries making sophisticated, top Oregon Pinots include Arterberry Maresh, Ayoub, Daedalus, and Winderlea. Each winery makes a single vineyard "Juliard" - many have been Reserve Pinot noir Wine Club Premium Selections. |
