Dusky Goose 2008 Pinot noir, a wine that has become an Oregon Pinot benchmark by word of mouth alone, is ready for you. Dusky Goose is always at the top of our highest-rated list, even though it is not submitted for review to any wine critics. It is one of the top 10 Oregon 2008 Pinot noirs and belongs in your cellar.

If I had a case of Dusky Goose 08 for every time I've been asked when the 08 Pinot will be released, I'd have the whole Dusky production (and that's about 800 cases)! So much anticipation and expectation...and the Dusky 08 delivers. For me, it always does.

Dusky Goose is a collaboration between owners John and Linda Carter, winemaker Lynn Penner Ash, and vineyard manager Andy Humphrey. The Carters are uncompromising in their approach to Dusky Goose - the wine reflects their dedication to Pinot perfection.

Dusky Goose

Dusky Goose
Pinot noir Dundee Hills 08

Made by Lynn Penner-Ash

Love and marriage, horse and carriage, you know the song - two things that go together perfectly. Add Dusky Goose and Oregon's 2008 vintage, a heavenly match. The nose is like perfume for wine lovers, exotic and comforting at the same time, with wafts of black cherry, orange, clove, cedar, licorice and sweet earth. The flavor flows with voluptuous black cherry, then adds a pulsating ribbon of raspberry coulis. The momentum builds, giving just the right oomph and creaminess. The finish hangs like a trapeze artist - delicate, balanced, awe-inspiring.

When first opened, The Goose is a little shy, so give it some space to open up (I wrote my notes on day 2). The 2008 has serious long term aging potential. By it, stash it, love it. - Marcus

Wine Spectator - "Light on its feet, with gorgeous currant, plum and wet stone aromas and flavors that remain expressive and intense without any apparent weight. Tannins are beautifully integrated, while the finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2020. From Oregon." - H.S

Evening Land Vineyards
Summum Chardonnay 08

$108.00 any 12 bottles

Wine Spectator 95 points

Here's what we wrote about the Summum Chard months before the Wine Spectator review:

The secret is out: Oregon is making world class Chardonnay - that's WORLD - and the Evening Land Summum Chardonnay 08 is in that class.

Think crushed seashell, flint, lemon, pear, white peach, and a hint of nutty custard. A rich and creamy mid palate meets super-racy acidity. The wine was aged in 30% new barrels, but there's no discernible oak presence. This is serious, long-term aging Chard. Buy it, stash it, learn the secret. - Marcus

Wine Spectator: Tangy, refined, complex and inviting, this steely wine has a leesy character that weaves through the lime, mineral, green tomato and green apple flavors. Unusual, but with tremendous finesse and depth. Unlike any other Oregon Chardonnay. Best from 2012 through 2018. From Oregon. - H.S.

Pinot noir 08 $74.95

Highly Recommended
Incredibly Age-worthy

If you collect wine, you have Beaux Freres in your cellar. There is no better Oregon Pinot for aging. Grab an older Beaux Freres bottle - ANY vintage - pop the cork and get ready for an ethereal experience.

A tremendous perfumed nose blossoms in the glass. Co-mingling of rose petal, lavender, crushed raspberry, forest floor, fresh turned earth, incense, roasted meat, cedar, and barely there peppery spice.

The 08 Estate has purity, perfect structure, and balance. Fascinating to try in 10, 15, 20 years. In retrospective tastings of Oregon Pinot held in a decade or more from now, this will be a main attraction.

Among the Finest 2008's

Bergstrom Vineyard Pinot noir 08 $77.75

$69.97 any 12 bottles

Wine Advocate 93 points

The 2008 Pinot Noir Bergstrom Estate is sourced from the winery's 15 acres in the Dundee Hills AVA. Medium ruby in color, it exhibits an enticing bouquet of rose petal, spice box, toast, incense, cherry, and raspberry.

On the palate it is the most succulent of the Bergstrom offerings with densely packed red fruits, a satin texture, plenty of structure, and a lengthy, sweet finish. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2012 to 2023. - Jay Miller

You need to know about this winemaker

260 cases made

Robert Brittan spent 16 years as Winemaker and Estate manager for Stags' Leap Winery in Napa. He is considered possibly the most knowledgable winemaker on Petit Sirah in the world. Robert created his famed Ne Cede Malis (Never give in to Misfortune) at Stags Leap. We think Robert is going to achieve the same level of fame for his Oregon Pinot noirs. And the Gestalt 08 is one reason why.

Rich flavors of raspberries, blueberries and dark chocolates with a hint of allspice. The soft tannins are perfectly balanced with the acidity and the wine displays a long lingering finish of plums and sweet spice. - the winery

Rachel Pinot noir 08 $37.95

$34.16 any 12 bottles

Wine Advocate 92 points

Volkman Vineyards

The 2008 Pinot Noir Rachel Estate was aged in 50% new oak. Stylistically similar to the Jacob Estate but with darker-tinged fruit and a bit more depth, this is a wine of grace and finesse with intense flavors, a silky texture, and a seamless finish. It offers a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2023. - Jay Miller

Elegant and graceful, sweet red raspberries and rose perfume announce an exceptionally silky textured, sensuous wine. Raspberries and red cherry fruit join sweet spice and minerals in an expansive, luscious balance of refinement and power. A long, smooth finish shows the structure and intensity to cellar and drink well for a decade. A Pinot lover's treasure. - Jean

Dusky Goose Library Release

2006, 2007 vintages from the winery's cellar

Monumental and mesmerizing, Dusky Goose Pinot noir is sought after and hard to find. Exclusive to Avalon, Dusky Goose is releasing a small amount of 2006 library wine as part of a two bottle gift pack.

One bottle each
in an attractive gift box (at right)

Dusky Goose
Pinot noir 06

Succulent red fruit wafts from the glass with a deep base note of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and dark berries, hinting at what's to come. At once silky-supple and powerful, the 06 Goose cascades across your palate with mixed cherries--black, fresh dark sweet, and dried--before picking up the bottom notes of rich blackberry and hints of cassis.

Dusky Goose Pinot noir 07

A rich and graceful perfume of raspberry, rose, cherry, spice box and raspberry tea. Replete with sweet, succulent fruit, the palate fans out with dark dried cherry, raspberries and fresh cream, with hints of darker berries. Full and round, silky and ripe, the Dusky finishes with its classic truffle note, caramel, mixed berries and a touch of dried thyme.

Make a splash with this crowd pleasing red

$35.95/$32.36 in a case of 12

Save on this double bottle - regular price $49.95, save $14 a bottle.

Abbot's Table 2008 is the perfect example of a "smooth" wine. Velvety, lush, round flavors glide over your taste buds. The Zinfandel and Sangiovese provide the backbone and show in the lingering finish of sweets plums, raspberries and cherries.

More than a third of the 08 Abbot's is Bordeaux virtueless - the deep cassis and black cherry flavors are a perfect complement to the fresh, bright red fruits. There's a meaty complexity to the finish that adds even more character to an already outstanding value table wine.

The current vintage of Abbot's Table is 2009 (2008 is sold out) except for these special magnums.
