A commanding Pinot Noir that pulls your attention to the glass. Heaping layers of lush fruit on the palate, red raspberries combine with blueberries trumpeting their arrival and lingering long. A ribbon of vanilla and nutmeg winds through the mid-palate making for a balanced finish. This is one of the darkest, biggest Pinots I've tasted from the 2011 vintage. - Andy

Winemaker Chris Mazepink says: A voluptuous, layered palate of rich, round juicy fruit is accented by the scent of forest floor, mushrooms, plums and fresh leather. The Olenik Vineyard is a very warm site, and the resulting wine (47% Olenik Vineyard fruit) is bigger and plusher than almost any other from 2011. It will see its 5th birthday without any trouble but you can open it immediately and get great pleasure. A very forward Pinot, food friendly and versatile.

The Quarry is named for the rocky soils of the vineyards Chris uses to make this wine. The wine is inspired by the black, intense character of the wood called Ebony, from trees native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been described as dense, fine in texture and very smooth when finished: all qualities found in Chris's wines.

2010 Vintage

One of the four top Oregon Pinot noirs from the Oregonian's tasting of 200 Pinots in March 2012.

Wow. I love a winemaker with something new to say and Chris has it. He calls the rows of barrels in his winery his "spice rack", and from it he created this terrific Pinot noir.

The Ebony 2010 Quarry Vineyard Pinot is much bigger than the other 2010 Pinots I've tried so far this year, plump and full bodied. It is a big, well structured wine with a backbone of polished tannins to balance its ample flavors.

Breathe in the scents of bramble, black fruit, and spice and the size of this wine is unmistakable. Juicy black fruit flavors of blueberry, plum, and blackberry are round and expansive. Lots of complexity here, with hints of bramble, graham cracker, cherry hard candy, dried herbs, and a finish of shot silk - smooth in your mouth with a tiny bit of texture. Chris suggests drinking now with decanting or cellar for 3-5 years. -Jean

Sadly, this great wine (at a bargain under $30 price) is only available to Avalon's Wine Club members. It is an April 2012 Club Selection.

The Oregonian named the 2010 "The Quarry" one of the top 4 Pinots from their 200 Pinot blind tasting in March 2012. Here's what they said:

"Chris Mazepink has guts. When the former winemaker at Shea Wine Cellars and current director of viticulture and winemaking for Benton-Lane Winery in Monroe introduced his new label, Ebony, he made it primarily a direct-to-consumer brand..... this is a wine aiming for cult status. And this pinot, from Ebony's second-ever vintage, certainly stands out from the rest. It's juicy and silky, with an alluring texture imparted by the use of oak (instead of steel) fermentation tanks. This is a pinot noir that will make you sit up, take notice!!!" The Oregonian, Katherine Cole, 05-22-12

2009 Vintage

Oregon Pinot noir - Ebony Wines The Quarry 09 -

Former Shea Wine Cellars winemaker Chris Mazepink has started his own winery!

The “Quarry” Pinot noir 09 at $32 is sophisticated, full bodied, complex and long.

Quarry is a big, mouth coating wine, dark garnet in color, with a shot silk texture on the palate and a juicy richness that we remember from the wines Chris made at Shea. Chris ferments in wooden vats (not an easy task) and the additional complexity he obtains from the process is evident in the wine. Silky smooth tannins, deep flavors, and a long sleek finish remain vivid memories after the wine is gone. - Jean
