I stopped by the winery last week because Ken was in Mexico on vacation and I needed some Evening Land Red Queen Pinot noir for a customer. I was talking with Isabelle Meunier, the winemaker (ultra-famous Dominque LaFon is the consulting winemaker.)
We got to talking about the La Source 08, all the kerfuffle about it in Wine Spectator. Turns out that she (and those of us at Avalon) think the Evening Land's Red Queen is their best Pinot of the 2008 vintage.
Just passing the info along to you. Mind bogglingly good. - Jean
A classy wine within a classic vintage. In a repeat of 2007, La Source 08 Pinot noir takes the fundamental flavors of the Seven Springs bottling and stretches it on both ends of the spectrum. It has greater concentration, fruit sweetness and depth on one end, more finesse, refinement and silkiness on the other.
La Source brims with savory dark cherry and meaty blackberry, tossing in licorice, crushed herbs, and bitter cocoa on the supple finish. Utterly fantastic Pinot noir that will enjoy a very long life in your cellar. - Marcus
La Source is sold out but if you'd like to see why people are calling Evening Land the "Cayuse of Oregon Pinot noir," we HIGHLY RECOMMEND Evening Land Eola Amity Seven Springs Pinot noir 08 $35.05 any 12
Evening Land La Source 08 - Wine Spectator 96 points!
Wine Spectator: Refined, elegant, focused and complex, piling layer upon layer of subtle flavors onto a racy, deftly balanced frame. Blackberry, currant and mineral notes compete for attention and mingle harmoniously on the long, expressive finish. Best from 2012 through 2020.- H.S.
Wine Advocate 93 points!
We at Avalon HIGHLY recommend this wine, which we think may be one of THE wines of the vintage.
Wine Advocate: The 2008 Pinot Noir La Source received the same elevage but was picked from a different parcel of the vineyard. It is slightly darker in color with more perfumed and complex aromatics with the addition of some earthy minerality. Savory, supple, and elegant, it will benefit from 3-4 years of additional bottle age and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2023. - Jay Miller

"Ruby-red. Candied red and dark berry aromas are complemented by musky floral and herbal qualities, with notes of cocoa powder and anise sneaking in with aeration. Lush and creamy on entry, then shockingly energetic in the middle, offering sweet black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a spine of lively acidity. Finishes on a dark fruit note, with velvety tannins and excellent clarity." - Josh Raynolds, IWC
