Evening Land Pinot noir Summum 09
A remarkable presentation of the terroir of the Seven Springs Vineyard, and more broadly, a statement of what makes Oregon Pinot noirs unique and exciting.
From the first impression to the final moment, an extraordinary sense of the vineyard. I've been to the Seven Springs many times over the years, and it has a unique quality. In scent and flavor, there are buckets of black fruit flavors accentuated by a melange of soil, dry brush, herbs, wildflowers and fresh earth.
The flavor of the 2009 was startling - it is a powerful statement of the terroir of an exceptional Oregon vineyard. The complex expression of Seven Springs reigns here.
Consulting Winemaker Dominique Lafon's famous white Burgundies are prized for their exquisite expression of terroir. The Evening Land Pinots show the same extraordinary sophistication. He and winemaker Isabelle Meunier are producing some remarkable wines, bringing a new and exciting perspective to Oregon Pinot noir. - Jean
Delicate, ethereal style is light on its feet, its red berry and Earl Grey tea flavors gliding easily through the long, expressive finish. Gets more interesting with each sip, finishing harmonious and elegant. Drink now through 2015. - H.S., Wine Spectator
This is Evening Land Vineyards' premier Pinot noir, made from the oldest Pinot vines at Seven Springs Vineyard. The vines grow on a tiny ledge at the bottom well of the La Source Cross where the ancient lava flow spread from North to South. The Witzel soils of Summum are extremely shallow and measure less than one foot before the roots strike hardened lava.
