Evening Land Vineyards Under $25 Pinot noir 08

Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills Seven Springs Vineyard 2007
WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 #97 NOW $38 WAS $48

-

Avalon Wine

Very few wineries have burst onto the international wine scene like the Evening Land Vineyards. One reason: their consulting winemaker is Dominique Lafon, one of Burgundy's top producers and the proprietor of Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Some of Lafon's wines are worth thousands, per bottle.

-

Evening Land Vineyards made Wine Spectator's Top 100 list in their first year of operation - with the Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills Seven Springs Vineyard 2007, now $38 from $48.

-

LaFon says: "I have tasted Oregon Pinot Noir, and while it is not the same as wines in Burgundy, Oregon is close in style to what we do," said Lafon, on a recent trip to Oregon. "For me, it is about elegance, purity and silkiness, not about alcohol and overripe fruit."

-

Evening Land Vineyards has taken their Oregon distribution in-house, which means big savings. We've passed them on to you!

GREAT VALUE!

-

Phenomenal, ultra-silky texture. Deep aromas lead into mouthwatering blackberry, strawberry, raspberry and blood orange notes perfectly complemented by toasty baking spices and white pepper on the finish. This is a wine that makes you hungry! - Marcus

-

70% Seven Springs, with contributions from well-known Oregon vineyards. Dominique Lafon, Consulting Winemaker to Evening Land Vineyards, visited "friends" in the Willamette Valley and snapped up stellar contributions to the Estate fruit. He designed it as "por ma guile" - for my gullet.

Wine Spectator 92 Points:
"Bright and juicy, with lively acidity and a streak of distinctive minerality running through the raspberry and floral flavors, lingering on the refined finish. Best from 2010 through 2014." - HS

-

Raspberry, truffle, white flower, licorice and smoked meat, with a savory dark cherry thread. Nicely structured and in a state of evolution, the 07 Estate will cellar well for 5-7 years. - Marcus

A fascinating Pinot noir. Anise candy and rose petal sets off the rich, expansive mid palate of mixed berry fruit. Snappy acidity and a touch of grip are all in check - they'll help La Source age for a decade. Pepper-accented pie cherries and sweet earth leave a lasting impression. Seven Springs fruit rocks. - Marcus

-

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 Points:
"The 2007 Pinot Noir La Source Seven Springs Vineyard was aged in a larger percentage of new oak. It exhibits a similar bouquet but greater structure and sweeter fruit on the palate. Ripe, concentrated, and with a masculine personality, it will benefit from 2-3 years of additional cellaring and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2019."

The Summum 07 shows qualities in Oregon Chardonnay never encountered before. Wine may be made in the vineyard, but clearly, the winemaker adds that magical something special. And Dominique Lafon takes Seven Springs Vineyard's old vine fruit to a level comparable to his famed white Burgundies of Mersault, where he surely reigns as king. Visiting Domaine Comtes-Lafon must be a religious experience.

-

Neal Martin (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate) says: 'A great wine from Dominique Lafon is something that will be etched upon your vinous memory for many years." I'll be remembering this Seven Springs Chardonnay for a long long time. - Jean

-

Wine Spectator 94 Points:

An arresting wine, stopping you in your tracks with its pure, clear, expressive pear, apple, chalk, wet stone and fromage blanc aromas, which follow through on the palate and dance easily on the long finish. Drink now through 2015. 115 cases made. - HS

From a series of wines blended by famous chefs for their restaurants, this wine was blended by Tom Colicchio, known for his group of "Craft" restaurants and for his performance as a judge on Bravo's Top Chef show.

-

Why is The Table Cab so well priced? I mean, Napa Cab - what is wrong about this picture?

-

Turns out, if you get in at just the right time, and know where to look, there's some amazingly good juice for sale in Napa. Pete, the vineyard manager at ONCE, also manages vineyards who sell grapes to Harlan, Araujo, etc. Maybe not the best known vineyards, but dang good ones. So Evening Land Vineyards bought some incredible juice. And made a Cab that compares well to wines at twice the price.
