Evesham Wood Pinots!

Willamette Valley 09 - Le Puits Sec 08

Russ Raney Hands Off to Erin Nuccio

Wine Spectator

Last night we feasted with Evesham Wood's founder, Russ Raney, and new owner and winemaker Erin Nuccio. An Evesham Wood wine dinner is a rare event - and this was also a celebration of the handover of the winery from Russ to Erin.

The food pairings were original and wildly successful. Most stunning (and gutsy) was the combination of roasted black cod and braised greens with the 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot noir. The meaty, perfectly prepared fish enhanced and emphasized the creamy red currant, raspberry and pie cherry fruit of the ripe, rich wine.

The high point of the evening was the pairing of the 2008 Le Puits Sec Pinot noir with a decadent combo of duck served two ways - seared and confit. The Le Puits Sec was fresh, silky, and creamy. Blackberry fruit mingled with subtle dried herb and forest notes. Expansive, powerful, and rich, it has the structure and balance to cellar for a decade.

Highly Recommended

The most generous, round and creamy Willamette Valley from Evesham in many years. Rich and ripe, it offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and a hint of dried herbs. Round and plush, silky red currant, raspberry and pie cherry fruit flavors are accented by hints of spice and herbs. Deep, concentrated, balanced, it's a good-time Pinot to drink now through 2012. - Jean

Time to fill the cellar

When people ask me about my favorite 2008 Pinots, I've always had to add in the caveat that Evesham Wood's Le Puits Sec 08 hasn't been released, but that it will be one of the top wines. Well, no more speaking in the future tense.

Le Puits Sec, Evesham's organically-certified estate bottling, is rolling and ridiculously good. The 08 has s slightly darker profile than many LPS vintages, sporting creamy black cherry and fresh blackberry with hints of mint, thyme, forest, and anise. Le Puits Sec Pinots are typically silky and soft - the 2008 adds a bit more structure without giving up any of the attractive silkiness. This stuff flies - speak now or you'll miss one of the best 2008's. - Marcus

Last night Russ pulled out a 2004 Le Puits Sec Pinot for the occasion - fresh, silky, round, and classic.

Russ poured the 2004 Le Puits Sec with the just released 2008 Le Puits Sec Pinot noir. His explanation for the choice - the vintages, considered the two best of the 2000's, will improve with proper cellaring over the next decade.

The contrast of the just released 2008 and the 2004 showed the salutary effect of aging on two of the best recent Oregon vintages. Both wines were fresh, classic Pinot, with the 2004 showing us what to expect from the 2008, if we can just be patient, and leave it in the cellar!

LUC is the restaurant of Avalon's fomer employee Adrienne Marler and chef Ian Hutchings. It's a new restaurant with buzz up and down the valley. Tiny and one of a kind, LUC reflects Adrienne's enthusiasm and experience with wine in its creative, excentric wine list. Chef Ian Hutchings enjoys a loyal and growing following for his expressive talent with local ingredients, expertly prepared.
