Evesham Wood "Le Puit Sec"
Pinot noir 06
$34.95/$31.46

Avalon WineWhy did we choose this wine?

Because Russ Raney is an icon of Oregon wine. He's a winemaker's winemaker. Russ makes Oregon Pinot noir with an expert knowledge of Burgundy.

Because the following for this wine is fanatical and Le Puit Sec is grabbed up intantly in Oregon. Very little is sold outside his mailing list.

Because the Evesham Wood Le Puit Sec Pinot noir 06 is one of the standouts of the vintage. Evesham Pinots are elegant and classy, as close to Burgundy as Oregon gets. Combining that house style with the ripe, forward 2006 vintage, Le Puit Sec 06 exhibits gorgeous aromas of red fruit perfume and spice. A generous core of cherries is accented by currants and dark berries. Tiny herbal notes appear on the integrated finish.

Seven of Hearts Pinot noir 06
$29.95/$26.95

Avalon WineWhy did we choose this wine?

Because Byron and Dana Dooley moved to Oregon to make great Pinot and keep their chocolate cool. (Dana makes chocolates that complement Byron's wines at her "Honest Chocolates" store in McMinnville).

Because Byron's Pinots remind us of those of his heroes, Russ Raney of Evesham Wood and Brian O'Donnell of Belle Pente.

Because the Seven of Hearts 2006 Pinot noir is a spicy, fruity Pinot noir, ready to drink and enjoy. In the nose, red raspberry and red pie cherry prevail. In the mouth, the red fruit flavors continue, with soft sweet pie spice and a hint of fresh turned earth.

John's Luminous Hills Estate Vineyard comes online in 2008, and we're excitedly looking forward to snapping up the wines.

Avalon WineJ Albin Pinot noir 06
$29.95/$26.95

Why did we choose this wine?

Because John Albin's tiny personal winery shows his personal take on Pinot Noir. He's winemaker at King Estate, and J Albin is where he lets his creativity show.

Because the 2006 Pinot noir is made from the best part of J Albin's Laurel Vineyard, a block of old vine Pommard grapes. John and Lynn Albin planted the 17 acre site in 1981, and the grapes are grown to John's personal preference, made into his personal Pinot noir.

Because John may make highly regarded wine for some of Oregon and Washington's largest wineries, (Columbia, King Estate among them) but his personal vision of Pinot noir is even better.

Because the J Albin 2006 Laurel Vineyard Pinot noir is luscious. It's simultaneously refreshing and rich. Intense sweet blackbery and black raspberry fruit flavors meld with hints of sweet pie spice in the scent and flavor. A velvety, long finish balances juicy fresh fruit with seamless tannins.

Whistling Dog Pinot noir 06
$28.95/$26.05

Avalon WineWhy did we choose this wine?

Because the Whistling Dog 2006 Pinot noir is made from their estate vineyard, Nuestro Sueno. Nuestro Sueno, one of the oldest vineyards in the Eola Hills AVA, was planted in the early 1980's and produces exceptional fruit. Tom and Celeste also sell their grapes to wineries that make $60 plus wines from the same fruit as is in theunder $30 Whistling Dog Pinot.

Because the wine is a big, plush crowd-pleaser that is also balanced. It can be cellared for a few years or enjoyed now.

Because the Whistling Dog 2006 Pinot noir is a juicy wine with aromas of violets, dark fruit, and a hint of anise; spicy blueberry, blackberry, and plum flavors; and a silky, rich finish. It shows all the best characteristics of the 2006 vintage's style - bold, appealing blackberry and black fruit flavors, rich texture, and a complex blend of fruit, spice, tannins and refreshing acidity. It's an exceptional wine.
