This year Seattle Met Magazine ranked Washington wines by varietal. The #1 Cabernet Sauvignon is Fielding Hills 2010. This dynamite Cab melds black cherry, black currant, vanilla and herbs and in a lush package. Plenty of supple fruit to enjoy now, plenty of structure to reward a few years of cellaring. Highly recommended. - Marcus

2009 Wine Spectator - 92 points - Crisp, focused and inviting, this brims with fresh cherry and raspberry fruit, playing against hints of mineral and herb. The finish lingers gently. Drink now through 2017. - H.S.

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

2008 Wine Spectator - 91 points - Big and brawny at first, this is ripe with dried blueberry and fig flavors, showing notes of coffee and toasted walnut that weave through the long, expressive finish, which ends with warmth and a velvety texture. Drink now through 2018. 192 cases made.- H.S.

If you can only try one of the Fielding wines, this is it. I might argue that the Syrah shows the uniqueness of his vineyard more strongly, but the Cabernet is his most refined and sophisticated. Mike balances this big wine on the head of a pin - it's that well made. If I wanted to show friends the essence of Washington Cab, this would be one of my top choices, and it is certainly the best priced. - Jean

2008 Wine Enthusiast - 95 points - Paul Gregutt, who has followed this winery since their inception, says it well: "Though the blend includes small portions of other grapes - 9% Syrah, 3% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc - this really champions the essential character of great Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. Its core fruit is supple and compact cassis and black cherry, with a spicy top that resonates well into the finish. Concentrated and beautifully proportioned".

Fielding Hills' highest rated wine, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is also one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of 2010.

This is an impressive Cabernet. It shows a deep ruby color and rich aromas of blackberry, raspberry and cassis with scents of rose petals, oriental incense and cigar box. The flavors are generous and sophisticated, interweaving red/dark fruits with notes of loamy earth, minerals, licorice, French roast and graphite. The back is well textured, with the well-wrought fruits gliding effortlessly into a lightly spiced, subtle oak finish, marked by fine-grained tannins and balanced fruit acids. 18.5+/20 points. - Rand Sealey's Review of Washington Wine

The most sophisticated of the Fielding Hills wines and the most lauded. The 2007 vintage is the best ever from the Riverbend Vineyard.

Scents of chocolate cherries, graham, sweet tobacco, Chambord, and dark roasted espresso bean explode from the glass. The scent continues in the flavor, with the addition of sweet blackberry, licorice, and a firm, vibrant core of tannins for aging. The vibrance of the vintage brings a bright uplift that calls for another sip - quickly! - tasted 9-22-09 - Jean

2006 Vintage Tasting Notes

2006 Wine Spectator - 93 points - Smooth and silky, offering a plush mouthful of lavender-accented black currant, cherry and espresso flavors that weave together through the long, vibrant finish. Has great stature and a welcoming feel. Drink now through 2016. From Washington."

The nose is playful, with red berries, black cherry candy and caramel. Then POW! Fielding Hills Cabs capture the essence of Cabernet, with a dense cassis core accented by sweet black cherry. Great structure and balance. The caressing finish echoes with dried herb, licorice, earth, and generous black fruit.

Paul Gregutt's Top 100 Washington wines for 2006 included the Fielding Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 04 at the NUMBER THREE SPOT. The only wines ranked higher were from Quilceda Creek and Cayuse.
