Popping the cork on a bottle of John Grochau's wine makes me smile. Whatever's going on at the time gets better. His wines are spot-on - whether it's a crisp white, a lush Syrah, or one of his distinctive Pinot noirs, he knows how to make 'em. I buy his wines because not only does he make a good bottle at a good price, he has something original to say, and what he says keeps getting better. - Jean Yates, Avalon Wine

What you want to know about John Grochau and his wines:
- Winery Founded - 2002

-Best known for - The ultimate Portlandia winery. Foodie nirvana, under $20 wines you can just grab as soon as you see they're from him. Cult-like following among Portland residents. Bike wine.
-Best Wines - Under $20: "Commuter" Pinot noir, Grochau Cellars "Red", the "Pink", "Tinto" red blend. Pinots: For drinking right now - Commuter and Willamette Valley Pinots. Pinot for foodies - Cuvee Des Amis. For cellaring and special occasions - Dundee Hills, Eola Amity.
John Grochau's wines and Portland's hip urban scene - they go together. Grochau makes his wines in a warehouse district industrical space shared with other innovative producers. He makes red wines like Syrah and Tempranillo from up-and-coming vineyards in the Rogue Valley, and Pinot noir, Savignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc from choice sites in the Willamette Valley.
Grochau makes wine for foodies - he worked at Portland's landmark Higgins Restaurant for 13 years. The bulk of his wine disappears into the cellars of some of Portland's top eateries - the rest sells out to a loyal customer following in the city and surrounds.
Before starting his winery, John worked at several California wineries. He moved back to Oregon in 2000 to work at Erath. In 2001, he moved to Brick House, where he worked with the iconic Doug Tunnell as assistant winemaker.
