Review:

Beautiful, deep ruby color. 2011 was the coolest vintage in the Walla Walla Valley in 20 years. It was a winemakers vintage and one that will forever separate the “men from the boys”. Everything had to be executed to perfection in the vineyard, a feat in which we managed to accomplish. Merlot, being the earliest variety we have to ripen, was truly at home in this vintage and produced a wine I can aptly describe as resembling the finest Right Bank Claret from Bordeaux. Such is its leaness, levity, and beauty. The nose is just loaded with pure red and blue berries, along with floral notes. Fantastic acid punctuates the lovely finish. - the winery

2010 Vintage Tasting Notes

Dense, dark, and lush but with amazing focus and levity. Loaded with dark blue and black fruits. Gorgeous high tone aromatics are reminiscent of brambleberry reduction compote. Long and plush on the palate, but with a fine grained tannin structure and brilliant acidity from the epic 2010 vintage. This may be the finest Merlot in Leonetti’s history. I am completely enamored by the complexity of this wine. The cool vintage gives such restraint to the opulence of the fruit. This wine will drink well upon release but age for many years to come.

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

One of the most complex aromas I've ever seen on any Merlot. Exploding out of the glass are ripe red fruits, candle wax, violet and other floral aromas, caramel, graham crackers, and a puree of bramble fruits. The wine has laser precision and is quite structured for Merlot - and while drinking great now, will reward a few years of aging. - the winery

2007 Wine Advocate - 93 points - The purple-colored 2007 Merlot contains 7% Petit Verdot. The nose offers up a whiff of new oak along with scorched earth, mocha, black currant, blackberry, and a hint of chocolate. This leads to a medium to full-bodied, opulent wine with layered, savory fruit, succulent flavors, plenty of fine-grained tannin, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will continue to blossom over the next 5 years and present a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2022. - Jay Miller

Gary Figgins and son, Chris, keep tweaking things in the vineyards and cellar as they move toward totally biodynamic farming. As usual, their wines are benchmarks against which others must be measured.
