Review:

Matt Berson’s Love & Squalor wines just keep getting better. He stopped by the store recently to pour his new releases and rocked us with several of them. With all the ripe and lusty 2012 Pinots out there, it’s refreshing to taste a more ethereal, less overtly fruity wine like Matt’s 2012 Willamette Valley. Red fruit, citrus, sandalwood, and warm spice notes sashay on the elegant but persistent frame. - Marcus

From winemaker Matt Berson: “The Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a multi-vineyard and multi-appellation blend comprised of these vineyards: Winter’s Hill 26% (Dundee Hills), Temperance Hill 16% (Eola-Amity), Cherry Grove 16% (Gaston), Cuddihy 15% (Yamhill-Carlton), Barnes 15% (Cascade Foothills), and Saikkonen 12% (Ribbon Ridge). The intent of this wine is to capture the essence of the vintage. Like making jam in my kitchen, I see winemaking as a preserving of the harvest. I look for a sweet fruit aroma to pull you into the glass followed by all of the nuances that make us love Pinot Noir. A bright acid profile is key to keeping the palate vibrant, pairing the wine with food and letting the flavors linger long after the swallow. Balance creates a dynamic wine that is exciting to drink and that pairs well with a variety of foods."

Previous vintage notes: if Love & Squalor's Pinot noir was simply a product of osmosis, it would be delicious. What could I be talking about? Winemaker Matt Berson is the assistant at Brooks, and makes his wines at Matello - both wineries are major favorites. Matt has his own style and vineyard sources that imprinted his 2011 Pinot with gorgeous aromatics, detailed red fruits with a darker fruit finish, and a melange of spice and herbs. Fruit sourced from the Temperance Hill, Winter's Hill, Momtazi and Johan Vineyards.

Matt Berson, the winemaker/owner of Love & Squalor, began working in the Oregon wine industry in 2003, after leaving his previous career in the restaurant industry. He was taught the rudiments and joys of winemaking by Patty Green of Patricia Green Cellars. Additionally, he has scurried in the cellars of Jimi Brooks (Brooks), Jay Somers (J. Christopher), Larry McKenna (Escarpment, NZ), and Ernie Loosen (Dr. Loosen).

He is currently the assistant winemaker for Brooks Winery in the Eola Hills.

Love & Squalor’s primary source for grapes, Temperance Hill Vineyard, is a late-ripening organically farmed site in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The grapes come from the older, self-rooted 'North' block.
