Review:
If Love & Squalor's Pinot noir was simply a product of osmosis, it would be delicious. What could I be talking about? Winemaker Matt Berson is the assistant at Brooks, and makes his wines at Matello - both wineries are major favorites. Matt has his own style and vineyard sources that imprinted his 2010 Pinot with gorgeous aromatics, detailed red fruits with a darker fruit finish, and a melange of spice and herbs. Fruit sourced from the Temperance Hill, Winter's Hill, Momtazi and Johan Vineyards.
Matt Berson, the winemaker/owner of Love & Squalor, began working in the Oregon wine industry in 2003, after leaving his previous career in the restaurant industry. He was taught the rudiments and joys of winemaking by Patty Green of Patricia Green Cellars. Additionally, he has scurried in the cellars of Jimi Brooks (Brooks), Jay Somers (J. Christopher), Larry McKenna (Escarpment, NZ), and Ernie Loosen (Dr. Loosen).
He is currently the assistant winemaker for Brooks Winery in the Eola Hills.
Love & Squalor’s primary source for grapes, Temperance Hill Vineyard, is a late-ripening organically farmed site in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The grapes come from the older, self-rooted 'North' block.
