2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

Today I tasted a remarkable wine - Michael Lundeen's 2008 Reserve Pinot noir.

I stopped what I was doing - I want to tell you about this wine.

Even before I lifted the glass, a huge, fragrant nose of sweet violets, roses, berry, and fennel spice stopped me in my tracks. Whoa! Intriguing and thought-provoking, a silky framework of juicy raspberry and blackberry fruit wove together flavors of thyme, mint, red cherry cobbler, fennel, and fresh turned earth.

It's not just that the Lundeen Reserve is complex, it's that the order in which the flavors show themselves is unusual. The wine took its own path from first scent to final taste. Just when the blackberry fruit was front and center, a smidgen of fresh fennel showed up.

As the hint of rich cherry compote emerged in the middle of the experience, fresh thyme floated by. Smooth tannins revealed themselves half way through, tasting like savory blackberry seeds from ripe fruit just off the vine.

I had a tremendous sense of Joie de vivre after drinking the Lundeen - the day was suddenly full of happy possibilities.

It was only after I tried the Lundeen that Marcus reminded me that it's made by Michael Lundeen - the same winemaker who made the Illahe Reserve 2008, one of those OMG wines we sent to our Reserve Pinot noir Club. - Jean
