Wild Reds from Washington's Highest Rated Vintage
Mark Ryan Wild-Eyed Syrah 07

Wine Spectator Declares 2007 A "Classic Vintage"

Avalon Wine

We'll be bringing you the best of the Washington 2007's as they are released. Here are the latest must-haves from Mark Ryan.

There's plenty of pomp and formality associated with high-end wines. You'll find none of that with Mark Ryan McNeilly. Instead, you have a brilliant young(er) winemaker who is just as likely to talk about Pearl Jam as he is to talk about his wines.

Mark Ryan's early wines were burly and tannic - we loved them for their bold, gnarly appeal. With every successive vintage, Mark's wines are a bit more polished while keeping their explosive edge. With all the hype around the 2007 Washington reds, we couldn't wait to see what Mark had in the cellar. His 2007 Wild Eyed Syrah is a worthy follow-up to the 94 point 2006. In fact, it's better.

Wild Eyed Syrah 07

Previous, 2006 vintage Wine Spectator 94
Rich, densely layered sweet blackberries, black cherries, and black raspberries are both wild and refined. When the Wild Eyed isn't busy catapulting intense fruit, it's sneaking in with espresso, anise, licorice, bacon, purple flowers and vanilla. Polished and supple, this is pop-and-pour good right now, with balance to last a decade.

Everyone clamored for Mark's 2006 Wild Eyed after its 94-point rating from Wine Spectator. This is better Syrah from a better vintage.

Crazy Mary Mourvedre 07

M what? Mourvedre hails from the south of France and produces wines that are bold and meaty. A tiny amount is grown in Washington and an even tinier amount gets bottled on its own. Mark Ryan never shies away from the unconventional - the Crazy Mary delivers rushed blackberries, smoked meat, minerals and toasty oak. Only 100 cases made.

Water Witch Red 06 $46.95/$42.26

The Water Witch 06 from Mark Ryan Winery is a monster - a massive yet approachable mouthful of over the top, huge flavor.

The scent is lush- white violets, chocolate, cherry sundae, vanilla and black cherry. Flavors of black cherry, plum, and cassis mix with bittersweet chocolate, licorice, vanilla, leather, and toast. As the wine lingers and finishes, a hint of milk chocolate begins to emerge.

The 2006 Water Witch could not be more hedonistic and appealing. Highly recommended for those who like their wines huge and crowd pleasing. The 2006 Water Witch is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, all from Klipsun Vineyard.

Long Haul Red 06 $46.95/$42.26

Cabernet Franc and Merlot collide into an intensely fragrant, structured beauty. Huge red berries and red cherries build into darker shades of plum, melding with dark cocoa, smoky ancho, red licorice, graphite, and desert herb. The Long Haul 06 will show best with a couple years in the cellar and will drink well for many years to come. Ciel du Cheval Vineyard fruit from Red Mountain: 52% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot.

"The Dissident" Red 07

2007 will go on record as one of the best vintages for Washington reds - maybe the best yet! Mark uses "dissident" juice--Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah from his top vineyard sources--and turns it into one of the best value reds from Washington State. Huge, velvety black and red fruits wash over your palate. An awesome display of rich, juicy, powerful red wine. - Avalon

This delicious blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot comes from one of the best vintages on record in Washington state, and we think this is it's best incarnation yet. Rich, round and juicy with a velvety full body and a long lasting finish, this wine is made to drink young or will cellar well for years to come. - the winery 39% Merlot, 34% Syrah, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon &1% Petit Verdot
