Review:

Ready to have your perceptions of Pinot gris shattered? I was. I've sort of given up on Oregon Pinot gris for home drinking - it rarely has the acidity I crave and all to often adds a touch of sweetness that doesn't suit my tastes. Enter Matello's Clover, a reserve Pinot gris that is treated like a reserve wine, right down to the extended barrel aging (all neutral oak). The 2011 was just released because it needed time; it wasn't treated as a solution to cash-flow that's cranked out as quickly as possible after vintage. Depth, texture, fantastic acid, it is in an elite (and small) class of Oregon gris.

Am I surprised that a wine like this came from Matello/Marcus Goodfellow? Not at all. He's one of the most dynamic winemakers in the Willamette Valley, if not on the West Coast. Marcus's full range of Pinot noirs stunned us last year, as did his first release of Richard's Cuvee Chardonnay (and his second, the 2011, which is one of Oregon's best Chardonnays, period). No doubt the new winery has helped increase quality, but Marcus has had the talent all along. I want to give him some Pinotage, quite possibly the world's most maligned grape varietal, to see if he can make it good. Something tells me he could… - Marcus
