![]() Matello WinesDon't let Matello Wines' small size fool you: Matello makes some Oregon's best Pinot noirs and white wines. Owner and winemaker Marcus Goodfellow is a star of the indie wine set in Portland, well-known among Portland's "foodies". Marcus's deep knowledge of wine and winemaking began at the Heathman Hotel, where he rose from bus boy to wine expert. He continues his connection to the restaurant community - his Matello Pinot noir was selected for a James Beard dinner in New York City just a few years after he started making wine. Goodfellow developed his winemaking skills while working closely with Amy Wesselman and David Autrey of Westrey. Matello wines are made from grapes purchased from several locations in the Willamette Valley. Marcus makes some his best wines from Pinot noir grapes sourced from the Whistling Ridge Vineyard in the Ribbon Ridge AVA. The vineyard lies directly above Beaux Freres Vineyards. |

More About Matello Wines
Marcus' philosophy in winemaking is to "let it be." He allows the natural beauty of the fruit to take center stage and builds a perfectly balanced wine around its natural evolution, without manipulation. Marcus does not alter the young wine's fermentation with yeast, and he uses little new oak. Oak is used for aging to add texture rather than flavor, allowing the fruit to predominate. Goodfellow's winemaking process results in wines that allow the terroir to shine through. He takes risks and produces unique and memorable wines. Matello is an "Insider" winery worth knowing. below, Marcus Goodfellow outside his winery in McMinnville, Oregon
