Shea Wine Cellars released two new 2007 Pinot noirs to us this week – the 2007 East Hill and the Pommard. Shea Wine Cellars is the Shea Vineyard owner’s winery.
Our tasting notes:
Shea Wine Cellars Shea Vineyard East Hill Pinot noir
$54.95/$49.45 Immediately enjoyable dark raspberry, blueberry and loganberry meld with exotic notes of incense cardamom Well-integrated already, the 07 East Hill has a superb balance of oak, ripe fruit and acidity. The finish is succulent and sweet with red berry Pinot essence.
Shea Wine Cellars Shea Vineyard Pommard Pinot noir 07
$54.95/$49.45 Deeply pitched aromas of cherry compote, baking spice, and caramel lead to powerful palate of juicy black berry, plum, cherry and toasty oak. The 07 Pommard is a ripe-style Pinot with lots of complexity – dried oregano, cinnamon stick and black tea nuances carry through on the finish with fine tannins.
Any Pinot made from Shea fruit usually sells out as a futures purchase, or in a few days after release. The slow economy has one good effect – some of Oregon’s hard to get Shea wines are still available.
St. Innocent Shea Vineyard Pinot noir 07
$35.95/$32.36 One of our favorites, and a nice price, considering the fame of the vineyard. St. Innocent Pinot noir Shea Vineyard 07 has seamless layers of wild dark berries and a bead of sweet cherry entice your taste buds. Like the 2006, the 07 Shea has a rich texture and excellent weight. The finish stays fresh, with a violet-mint lift. St. Innocent’s 07 Shea shows nicely with a little decanting, and has the balance and integration to age for 8-10 years. Highly recommended.
Penner-Ash Shea Vineyard Pinot noir 07
$54.95/$49.45 Sold out at the winery. Focused black cherry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors on the nose. Expansive red and black fruits along with fine-grained tannins compliment a broad, textured palate. Vanilla and Asian spice lingers on the finish. 315 cases made. – the winery
We sent out an email about all of the available Pinots made from Shae Vineyards fruit. We are also offering a Sampler of six different Pinot noirs from the 2007 vintage made from Shea Vineyards fruit. The wineries include Shea Wine Cellars, Penner-Ash, Raptor Ridge, St. Innocent, and Panther Creek. You save about 13% off retail for the six bottle sampler. If you’d enjoy a bit of a different style tasting, try these six Shea Pinots together with friends. The wines are remarkably different, and yet all have a “Shea” component in the flavor.
