Washington Wine – Betz, Sheridan, Rich

We posted the new Betz and Andrew Rich wines online yesterday, along with the new Andrew Rich Cabernet Franc.

Bob Betz’s Betz Family Winery Pere de Famille 08 got 96 points from Wine Advocate and it went fast. The Clos de Betz 08 is close to sold out as well. We may have more of these wines after March 1. If you’d like to be notified, email us and we’ll let you know if they come in.

Sheridan Vineyards was the big news when Jay Miller’s latest article on Washington wines was published by Wine Advocate last year. Wow did he like Scott’s wines, giving two of his wines 98 points, and a bunch of other high scores and glowing comments.

We have his L’Orage 07 (95 points,) his Cabernet Franc 07 (94 points,) and his new vintage of Mystique – the 08 (the 07 got 92 points.) He also makes a good value label called Kamiakin and we have the current vintages of his Red Wine and Syrah under that label. You can see them here.

Andrew Rich is in Oregon, but fruit for his Cabernet Franc comes from Washington. His picture is at right, below. Here’s Marcus’s tasting note:

“The more 2008 Washington reds I taste, the more I love the vintage. Andrew’s 08 Cab Franc comes from the now-famous Red Willow Vineyard (source of super-highly rated Syrah from Owen Roe, for starters). Sporting notes of ancho pepper and rich, dark berries, this is a perfect middle point between a massive Washington red and a more elegant Pinot.”

And speaking of wines made from Red Willow Vineyard fruit…. David O’Reilly’s Owen Roe Red Willow Vineyard 1973 Block Cabernet Sauvignon 08 – I’ll say it again, this wine is going to follow the same trajectory as his Yakima Red, Kilmore Pinot noir, Dubrul Cab, etc – straight up.  And just like the Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah (Wine Spectator 97 points,) we sent it to the Wine Club, we keep telling club members about it, and you just wait – one of these days it’s going to come to the notice of a wine writer with a big following, and it’ll be gone gone gone. I have the occasional nightmare that someone gives it an 85 point score, but I also have nightmares that the Packers lost the Super Bowl and we know how that came out (Go Packers!)
