Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Highest Rated Oregon Pinot noirs
October 31, 2009 Issue

PLUS $15 Beaux Freres Rose 08

Avalon Wine

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate published their annual review of Oregon wines last week. Writer Jay Miller visited over 60 wineries to find his highest rated 2007 Oregon Pinot noirs.

Beaux Freres released a tiny bit of their 2008 Rose at the great price of $15. Grab it - it's a delicate, elegant wine that will pair beautifully with turkey or ham. And a steal of a price.

The 2007 Pinot Noir Homer is a selection of the top 13 barrels in the cellar (out of 205). Dark ruby-colored, it sports a slightly brooding bouquet of sandalwood, incense, damp earth, black cherry, and plum. It is the richest, densest wine in the collection as well as the best balanced. This silky-textured, deep, lengthy effort will evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2022. It is a candidate for wine of the vintage.

Dick Shea has 22 clients for the fruit he grows at his large Yamhill-Carlton estate, most of whom vineyard designate the resulting wine. More often than not, it is the best wine in their respective portfolios. - Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

We just tasted the 07 Private Stash yesterday with owners/winemakers Rolin Soles (Argyle) and Corby Stonebraker. According to Rolin "in this type of vintage (2007) anyone can get red fruit and minerality. The trick is the creamy midpalate - it makes the wine round and gives an impression of fullness in the mouth." And the wine shows that he accomplished his goal.

The 07 Private Stash's scent of dried roses and red cherry is echoed by red raspberry, red cherry, and sweet cherry candy fruit flavors. It is an elegant wine that gains weight and richness as a fresh, creamy quality opens upon tasting. Crisp, balanced minerality, and seamless tannins will allow the wine to cellar well for 3-5 years. - Jean

The 2007 Pinot Noir Private Stash is a richer, denser effort with a focus on the dark fruit side of the spectrum. Aromas of spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry lead to a medium-bodied, intensely flavored yet elegant Pinot with layered savory fruit, enough ripe tannin to support 2-3 years of further development, and a lengthy finish. Drink it from 2011 to 2019.

By a very thin hair, my personal favorite in this impressive lineup is the 2007 Winemaker’s Cuvee, a selection of the finest barrels in the cellar. Deep crimson-colored, it has a fragrant, alluring nose of smoke, spice box, incense, floral notes, and red fruits. Dense, sweet, layered, and complex, this rich effort will evolve for several years and drink well through 2022 making it one of the potentially longest-lived Pinot Noirs of the vintage.

Mark Vlossak, ensconced in his new winery, seems to be taking St. Innocent to new heights even in the challenging 2007 vintage. Do not overlook the excellent values, particularly the white wines, that are produced here and which were recommended in the Value Report. - Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2005 Beacon Hill Brut Rose is composed of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A deep salmon pink in color, it offers up an alluring bouquet of biscuit, rose petal, minerals, strawberry, and raspberry. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and flavorful on the palate, this vibrant effort is impeccably balanced and lengthy. It would be a fascinating experiment to place it in a blind tasting with Louis Roederer Cristal Rose and Dom Perignon Rose.

The 2007 Pinot Noir is medium ruby-colored with an alluring perfume of cinnamon, allspice, incense, cherry, and raspberry. This leads to a medium-bodied, elegant wine with excellent depth and concentration, a silky texture, and incipient complexity. This lengthy effort will provide pleasure from 2011 to 2019.

Maggie Harrison learned her craft at Sine Qua Non from 1998 to 2006. This tiny boutique operation has come out of the gate impressively... I tasted a splendid 2008 Pinot Noir Rose (still available at Avalon Wine) at the winery which is certain to be gone by the time this goes to press. - Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2007 Pinot Noir Estate is medium ruby-colored with an expressive bouquet of smoke, minerals, damp earth, spice box, cherry, and raspberry. Moderately structured on the palate with excellent depth and savory fruit, this lengthy, substantial Pinot will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well from 2011 to 2019. - Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2007 Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais is 100% Dijon clone bottled 6 months after the Cuvee de Tonnelier in March 2009. The bouquet displays sandalwood, violets, mineral, spice box, and assorted red fruits. More structured than its sibling, it has plenty of layered, ripe, savory fruit, excellent balance, potential complexity, and a long, pure finish. Drink it from 2011 to 2019.

Yepp, a Beaux Freres wine at $15. It's a 100% Grenache Rose, and Beaux Freres make about 100 cases each year. It's what the Etzels drink at home, and they share it with longtime customers and friends.

The Beaux Freres Grenache Rose 08 is from the great 2008 vintage - made by winemaker and co-owner Mike Etzel with his usual meticulous care and great skill. Light and a bit spritzy, this is a delicate Rose, dry and berry flavored. This Grenache Rose is a nice wine to offer white wine drinkers at holiday dinners - it pairs well with Thanksgiving turkey and lighter holiday fare.
