Review:

In a word? Exotic. From a vineyard known for intense, exotic scents and flavors, 2012 is a high point for the wine. The distinct Ana perfume is present: attar of roses, violets, lilac, and cherry candy. This vintage adds smoke, dusty earth, and sweet spices. Fresh blueberry juice and bright red cherry fruit flavors are tinged with earth, sandalwood incense and minerals in a medium-bodied framework of silky tannins. Jim and Patty's careful selection of vineyards shows - these old vines are managed by superstar viticulturist Andy Humphrey. If you must drink the Ana immediately, decant for a few hours. Cellaring for several years will bring out the best in this already top of the line Pinot. - Jean

Dundee Hills wines are well known for their rose petal laced cherry notes and this has those notes but adds complementary, heady tones such as violets on the floral side and blueberries on the fruit side. The texture is supremely silky but does not lack for stuffing or the elements for a highly ageworthy wine. - the winery

This site is located in the bowl off Worden Hill Rd., where it lies adjacent to vineyards such as Winderlea, Maresh and Arcus. This south-opening bowl creates a particularly warm micro-climate. Ana is the vineyard on the eastern side of this bowl so it benefits from the cooler slope and being toward the bottom of this bowl it also gets the cooling nature of the inversion that happens as well.

Planted in 1978, Ana Vineyard was purchased several years ago by vineyard manager extraordinaire Andy Humphrey who maintains it to this day. There simply is no replacing well-farmed, older vines in terms of the quality of the wine you are able to make from the fruit. The nuances, texture and complexity that these older vines provide are not qualities that a winemaker can imitate via technique. You either have older vines or you don't. With Ana Vineyard these qualities make for an incredible array of aromatics in every vintage and that is doubled-down on in 2012.

2010 Vintage

2010 Tanzer - 93 points - Bright red. An exotic, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes candied red berries, Asian spices and fresh rose, with subtle cola and smoke accents building with air. Spicy raspberry and cherry flavors show impressive depth but come off as lithe, with notes of blood orange and cinnamon adding vivacity. Closes tangy and long, with excellent clarity and persistence. - J.R.

This site is located in the bowl off Worden Hill Rd., where it lies adjacent to vineyards such as Winderlea, Maresh and Arcus. Planted in 1978, Ana Vineyard was purchased a few years ago by vineyard manager extraordinaire Andy Humphrey. This is our 5th vintage with Ana, however we have added a new (to us) block to the mix of the fruit we receive. We have had our eye on this section of the vineyard for years and it finally fell into our laps in 2009. While it will add some volume to the miniscule 190 case production of the '08 Ana more importantly it will actually increase the quality of the final blend we choose for the Ana bottling. There is simply no replacing well-farmed, older vines in terms of the quality of the wine you are able to make from the fruit. The nuances, texture and complexity that these older vines provide are not qualities that a winemaker can imitate via technique. You either have older vines or you don't. With Ana Vineyard these qualities make for an incredible array of aromatics including rose petal, freshly cooked rare lamb and earth-toned red spices. The texture of this bottling is always graceful. At once it is mouth-filling but never a "big" wine. The finish is long, subtle and complete. In 2009 where most things move toward bigger and bolder Ana Vineyard retains the characteristics that we love so much about it; balance, freshness, subtlety and sexiness. There is no mistaking the wealth of intensity in this wine but it is red-fruited to the core and lithe and nimble at the same time. This is going to be a classic bottling of Ana Vineyard. - the winery
