Patricia Green Cellars
Pinot Noir Ana Vineyard 2010
Review:
This site is located in the bowl off Worden Hill Rd., where it lies adjacent to vineyards such as Winderlea, Maresh and Arcus. Planted in 1978, Ana Vineyard was purchased a few years ago by vineyard manager extraordinaire Andy Humphrey. This is our 5th vintage with Ana, however we have added a new (to us) block to the mix of the fruit we receive. We have had our eye on this section of the vineyard for years and it finally fell into our laps in 2009. While it will add some volume to the miniscule 190 case production of the '08 Ana more importantly it will actually increase the quality of the final blend we choose for the Ana bottling.
There is simply no replacing well-farmed, older vines in terms of the quality of the wine you are able to make from the fruit. The nuances, texture and complexity that these older vines provide are not qualities that a winemaker can imitate via technique. You either have older vines or you don't. With Ana Vineyard these qualities make for an incredible array of aromatics including rose petal, freshly cooked rare lamb and earth-toned red spices. The texture of this bottling is always graceful. At once it is mouth-filling but never a "big" wine. The finish is long, subtle and complete. In 2009 where most things move toward bigger and bolder Ana Vineyard retains the characteristics that we love so much about it; balance, freshness, subtlety and sexiness. There is no mistaking the wealth of intensity in this wine but it is red-fruited to the core and lithe and nimble at the same time. This is going to be a classic bottling of Ana Vineyard. - the winery
