In a word? Terroir. The Estate Vineyard's oldest vines were planted in 1990 to 1994. Jim and Patty's meticulous management culminates in this unique, terroir-driven wine. An intense expression of the Ribbon Ridge mineral quality, unforgettably one of a kind.

Distinctive scent of dried blackberry mixed with quarry rock and fresh turned earth. Black fruit dominates - laced with an extraordinary mineral quality - Jim calls it "liquid quartz" and it comes from the old vines' roots reaching down into the rocks far below the surface. Dense and brooding, this is a cellar selection, meant to be aged for a few years to a decade before drinking. Pop the cork in 2020 and amaze your friends. - Jean

In a vintage like 2012 the upside of this wine is incredible and this wine will especially reward those with deep, dark cellars and a love for Pinot Noir with bottle age.

This is now our 13th vintage with this vineyard that we purchased in July of 2000. All the vines that go into this bottling were planted between 1984-1990. When we purchased this property there were issues with trellising, spacing, vine health, previous crop loads, soil management and so on. Agriculture is a slow process. Over the years we have cultivated, mulched, composted, cover-cropped, fertilized, ripped, tilled and done everything in our power to facelift this property to bring it up to the quality level that we knew existed here.

The older vines required an incredible amount of patience and we were nearly to the end of October by the time we finally had picked out these blocks. In the soft marine soils of Ribbon Ridge these older vines have dug to significant depths and tapped into the mineral-laced water on the property. The resulting wines have a distinct characteristic of liquid quartz which provides a level of complexity to complement the darker fruit profile that Ribbon Ridge wines offer up. This has a unique character to it that harkens to older world wines. - Jim Anderson
