Review: We have been in the fortunate position over the past couple of vintages to pick up some terrific sections of older vineyards and this one just adds to that fairly impressive list. Wahle vineyard is in the hills west and a bit south of Yamhill. The vineyard was planted in 1974 making it one of the oldest vineyards with its original vines still planted left in the state of Oregon. Being that was planted back in days when things were a little bit more of a wild west show there are multiple clones of Pinot Noir scattered throughout the vineyard. Since we were receiving, at least, the Upright Clone, Pommard and Wadensvil but in only 2.5 tons we co-fermented them all together rather than keeping them separate. The resulting wine is clearly one of the most unique Pinots we have ever produced. It is magenta in color with a developing aromatic profile that includes seemingly ever darkening Japanese plum, red currant, blueberry and loamy earth. The wine is nervy, with a good deal of energy lifting the mid-palate and leading into a well-defined and tightly-grained tannin finish. This is a unique wine that is definitely outside the realm of what our "normal" wines present. A great site that really shows the great aspects of this vintage. As good as we think the wine is from this block on a yearly basis what we have in barrel exceeds those annual expectations. This is so superbly pure, deep, perfumed and complex that it almost seems unique and unusual. This usually is a wine that has a masculine twist to a fairly feminine style of wine. Roles are reversed this year. This has trappings of grace and charm that will no doubt set in more distinctly over time but at present this is far and away the most full-throttle bottling of this block we have ever seen. There is an electricity and energy to this wine that is truly profound. The crop was fairly low on this block this year and we have a lower number of barrels to select from than in any of the past 3 vintages. - the winery |
