Patricia Green Cellars Pinot noir Quail Hill 05: Last time PGC will make wine from this site. Sweet cherries and strawberries in both scent and flavors start delicate and espand in the palate, finishing with dark tobacco smoke and earthy spices.

This vineyard lies on the north side of Rex Hill in the Chehalem Mountains on Laurelwood soil, which is a silty, nearly ashy, volcanic soil. The vineyard is twelve acres in size with about eight acres planted to Dijon 115 and the rest planted to Pommard.

There are very few vineyards in the southern Sherwood hills, which makes this an interesting place to explore. We re-started farming this vineyard in 2002 so this is our forth vintage having 100% influence in the vineyard and we are really starting to see the results of this care.

We were very interested in this site when it first started producing back in the late 90s and we think we are starting to see the fulfillment of its potential now that it is reaching 10 years in age. Unfortunately for us this is also our final vintage with this vineyard site. After the 2005 vintage the vineyard was sold and while the new owners are very nice people and quite fair with us they have elected to do business with a different winery. That is the nature of things sometimes and while we miss the fruit from this nice site we wish the new owners lots of success.

That being said we still had another year to learn about farming this site and making wine from it. In 1998, 2002 and 2003 we made fairly robust and powerful wines off of this vineyard. We have learned though that the vineyard is more prone to produce sappy, red tinged Pinots that are brimming with fruit and pure Pinot Noir goodness but really are not the blockbuster wines that we had been getting for a few years.

We adjusted in 2004 and again in 2005 to make a wine that was geared toward brightness of fruit. There are some stiff tannins that will resolve relatively quickly and are not really adding largesse to the wine. Ultimately this is a very attractive, stylish and full-flavored medium-bodied Pinot Noir which is what this site should really express. We'll miss it in the line-up. - the winery

2003 Tasting Notes

From the winery:

A concentrated and sappy wine with raspberry qualities. This is a cooler site permeated with morning fog and with a natural crop load of well under 1 ton/acre we had the ability to get good ripeness and a long hang time. The fruity notes are accentuated by a distinct smoky quality that lingers in the back of the wine adding some character and complexity. To highlight the sweet, plush fruit we took the new wood down from 56% in 2002 to 24% in 2004. This is an utterly enjoyable and sexy wine. We are still learning about this site. Interestingly this wine, while concentrated and sappy with boysenberry and raspberry qualities, is less dense and wild than the 2002 bottling. This is a cooler site permeated with morning fog and it definitely benefited from these conditions in 2003. The wine has tremendous purity and has the most true to varietal coloration with its gleaming ruby red tones. Other than the raw potential this vineyard possesses, PGC enjoys the completely different type of fruit they get from this vineyard. Rather than leaning towards red of black cherries as the primary descriptor, this wine starts out more as blueberries and works into slightly sage-y qualities as you get past the intensity of the attack of the wine.

2002 notes: This wine stands at the extreme "big" end of the PGC range of single vineyard Pinots, with Four WInds at the lighter end. The wine is very fruit driven and unusually lush. Patty used 56% new Cadus oak because she felt that the blue style of fruit would be well complemented by the subtle, sweet coconutty notes of hte Cadus barrels. This is an interesting and provocative wine, one that shows great potential for the future.
