Review:

This is the second vintage with this 40-year-old section of Pommard. Quite possibly better than the excellent 2010. The fruit and texture combine in a super-sophisticated and well-structured package. Phenomenal concentration and aromatics. As the winery says: "You know you have done something right when the folks that own the vineyard who really know their stuff are completely agog over the wine. That's how the Durants reacted..."

2010 Vintage Tasting Notes

2010 Tanzer - 92 points - Bright ruby-red. Heady aromas of red fruit preserves, Asian spices and fresh flowers, with subtle cola and smoke accents. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering zesty raspberry and cherry flavors and notes of spicecake and rose pastille. I like this wine's tension. Fine-grained tannins give shape and grip to the long, penetrating finish. This wine should age well on its balance. - J.R.

Earthy character and more a tannic structure than their other Pinot noirs. It has a wonderful mingling of pure red cherries, raspberries, that particular Dundee Hill spice along with an earthy undertone that fills in the wine giving it great dimension without adding to the mass of the wine. This is a bit of a sexy beast of wine that will have power and swagger in its youth and evolve into something exotic and complex with bottle age.

We have always been a huge proponent of Dundee Hill wines and we continue to seek out older vineyard sites tucked away in these hill. We were fortunate to land a section of Durant Vineyard this vintage and are thrilled that this will become an on-going relationship. The section of the vineyard we obtained was planted in 1972 which, even by Dundee Hill standards, is a very old vineyard site. This is 100% Pommard clone, the vineyard is tended extremely well and it is located almost equidistantly from Balcombe Vineyard and Eason Vineyard so we have a pretty clear understanding of this hillside.

There is just something about older vine fruit from Breyman Orchard Rd. in the Dundee Hills. They have that sweetness that the Worden Hill Rd. vineyards. This is a super-interesting wine for Dundee Hills Appellation fans. Again, like all these wines from the Dundee Hills crop loads were ridiculously low and while we were getting a couple of acres those acres only produced a little over a couple of tons of fruit. - the winery
