Oregon Exclusive: "Matot" Rosso $11.95

Plus Barolo, Barbera, Nebbiolo

Winelovers in Oregon have one of the best selections of small, artisan made Italian wines in the country, at bargain prices. In the case of the Corsini "Matot" red, Oregon is the only state in the country to import it! Podere Ruggeri Corsini is one of those highly regarded boutique Italian wineries whose production is too small for the big importers.

Avalon Wine

While Avalon's focus is Oregon and Washington wines, sometimes, a winery from another part of the world is just too good to miss. We love Italian wines, and want to share the "insider" gems with you. Tucked into the prime Barolo hills just outside Monforte d'Alba, Corsini is a family operation founded in 1995, and run by husband and wife team Nicola Argamente and Loredena Addari. They farm 18 acres of Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Nero grapes.

The Matot is a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto that is made exclusively for two markets: Oregon and Germany! This stuff flies off the shelf - it's an incredible value in Italian wine. Packed with juicy, ripe dark berry and cherry flavors that are round and mouthfilling, adding a touch of earth and tannin on the finish. - Marcus

40% Nebbiolo, 30% Barbera, 30% Dolcetto from the winery's estate vineyard. Our Matot wines are usually ruby-red in color. The Matot is noted for its supple body and its elegant perfumes, which can include scents of ripe cherries, blackberries, and, ripe plum. This wine goes well with all kinds of pasta dishes. - the winery

Seductive aromas of licorice, red berries, rose petals, spice, and resin. The scents from a glass of Barolo are hypnotic and ethereal--there are few wines like it.

Maybe the best thing is realizing the aromatics will only improve with time! The palate offers loads of macerated cherry and blueberry that sweeten on the finish, picking up blackberry, then mingling with cedary spice and subtle dark cocoa on the structured yet refined finish.

This is outstanding value Barolo that will provide years of enjoyment in the cellar - you could buy a case and drink a bottle each year for the next twelve and find an evolving masterpiece. Best to have this with food for near term drinking, like hearty meat dishes (braised short ribs would be perfect), from a decanter. - Marcus

100% Nebbiolo from a 26-45 year old vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. Medium-deep ruby red with garnet to orange overtones. There is an exhilarating rush of freshness on the nose, followed immediately by warming broader elements, which can include candied cherries, bitter cherries, plums, strawberries and raspberries. There are also darker tones of chocolate, hazelnuts, licorice, with herbs, cinnamon and vanilla as well. Barolo goes well with intensely flavored dishes based on braised meats and mature and spicy cheeses. - the winery

I'm not a big "color guy" when it comes to wine, but it's so easy to be captivated by the deep color of Corsini Barbera. That's only the beginning, as intense aromas of violets, chocolate, and mixed black fruits hit you.

Both rich and nimble, with impeccable balance, this Barbera works equally well as a sipper and with a variety of meals. We had it with farfalle, grilled chicken, and pesto cream. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve the bright, delicious character of Barbera. - Marcus

100% Barbera from the winery's estate vineyard. Barbera-based wines are usually ruby-red in color, whith purplish highlights when young. His nose is fresh, with soft scents of ripe plum, sensations that are carried through onto the palate. Lighter styles make a fine accompaniment to pasta and rice dishes. In Piedmont it is the wine par excellence for accompanying Bagna Cauda. - the winery

What do you drink while you're waiting for your Barolo to age? Corsini Nebbiolo! Classic aromas of licorice, flowers, and meat are backed by intense fruit. Gobs of sweet dark cherries and blackberries linger on the youthfully tannic frame. Better decanted, but very enticing right out of the gate when paired with a rustic beef stew. - Marcus

100% Nebbiolo from the winery's estate vineyard. Medium cherry-tinged ruby in color. His body is supple and his perfumes fresh and elegant. One finds violets,blue- berries, brambles, mint ,and a touch black pepper on the nose and palate. Braised stewed and roast red meat and game; aged cheese. - the winery
