Poet's Leap Riesling 08

Winery: Poet's Leap

Poet's Leap Riesling 08 from Longshadows Winery combines the white wine expertise of Armin Diel with Washington's excellent Riesling vineyards.

Previous vintage tasting notes: Inspired by the greatest wines of Germany and crafted by Armin Diel, proprietor of the renowned Schlossgut Diel. Tasting Notes: The 2005 vintage of Poet's Leap is an off-dry wine with expressive, spicy aromatics and generous, lively flavors. Fresh melon, honey, ripe apricot and a hint of citrus jump on the palate leaving a vibrant, racy impression on the long, clean finish.

Vintage: Columbia Valley's vintages are consistently reliable but the 2005 growing season was something special, making it a year likely to remembered as among Washington's finest. Summer temperatures were quite warm, with the heating backing off just enough in September to ripen grapes perfectly without hurrying the fruits' physiological maturity. The resulting wines are beautifully balanced and offer wonderful aromas and rich, focused flavor.

Winemaking: Grapes were hand-harvested and sorted, whole cluster pressed over two weeks to capture the brilliance of the fruit, then fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain the grapes' freshness and delicate aromas and flavors.

Vineyards: The 2005 Poet's Leap is a blend of several distinct Columbia Valley vineyards, linked by the maturity of their vines (20+ years) but distinguished by their unique terroir. Primary vineyard sources for these hand-harvested grapes include fruit from Dionysus Vineyard north of the Tri-Cities, planted in 1972 and Weinbau Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, planted in 1982.

MORE INFORMATION

2004 tasting notes From the winery:

Vintage:

The 2004 growing season produced magnificently ripe Riesling with plenty of fresh fruit character and natural acidity, due in large measure to the length of the growing season which started early in the spring and lasted into November. Temperatures remained constant throughout the season producing ideal conditions for perfectly ripened grapes without compromising the fruits' natural acidity.

Winemaking:

Grapes were hand harvest and sorted, whole cluster pressed over two weeks to capture the brilliance of the fruit and produce a clean juice that was then fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain the grapes' freshness and delicate aromas and flavors.

Vineyards:

The 2004 Poet's Leap is a blend of four distinct Columbia Valley vineyards. All four sites are linked by the age of their vines - 20+ years on average - but distinguished by their unique terroir. Each of these acclaimed sites, the best known being Dionysus originally planted in 1972 just north of Pasco, brought a distinctive contribution to the final blend. The result is a layered, complex wine, refreshing and fruit-forward , a portraiture of Washington's finest Riesling.
