Review:

The inclusion of the outstanding 2012 Ramseyer is bittersweet - this is its final vintage of production. The Ramseyers have decided not to continue making wine, which leaves us without a club member favorite. A what a final vintage!

John Ramseyer's wine interest and education started at home, in Seattle. His father was a home winemaker with deep connections in the Washington wine industry; he was good friends with Peter Dow, who opened one of the Seattle-area's most beloved restaurants, Cafe Juanita, and had a successful importing and distributing company. Together, Dow and John's father planted Washington's first Nebbiolo in Red Willow Vineyard, in 1985. John utilized this connection, becoming the manager and wine buyer for Cafe Juanita, where he learned, among other things, that the restaurant world was not for him.

His wine education continued after he finished college (in Oregon) and moved to San Francisco. John's day job in the insurance business found him hanging out after-hours at California Wine Merchants in the Ferry Building. He hung out enough that he worked his way into a second job, though they'd pay him in wine only. During those four years, he developed a love for Napa Cabernets. And decades later, hed make a top shelf Washington Cabernet.

Previous vintage notes: The Cabernet-based Ramseyer 2010 is one of the clear Washington standouts of the year.

Ramseyer's 2010 can be summed up in one word: luxurious. From the rich berry and caramel aromas to the velvety cassis and dark raspberry flavors, the wine has a regal air combined with a palate-staining savoriness. Supple and creamy from start to finish, this is an awesome choice for drinking now and will age nicely over the next 4-6 years if you have the patience. I highly recommend it. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 10% Malbec, all from Ramseyer's Estate vineyard in Zillah, nearby Sheridan. Production was down for the 2010 vintage, to only 250 cases. Last year's 93-point rating from Wine Spectator should be at least equaled, though I think the 2010 Ramseyer is a superior and classier wine than the 2009. - Marcus

For the first time, the Ramsayer Cabernet was made with grapes from the winery's Estate Ramseyer Vineyard. Located just down the road from Sheridan and Dineen wineries in Zillah, Washington. Owner John Ramseyer is the winemaker.

2009 Vintage

2009 Wine Spectator - 93 points - Supple, rich and expressive, this is vibrant with acidity against ripe cherry and raspberry fruit, with earthy notes and an undertone of mint. Shows depth and carry on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Best from 2014 through 2020. 320 cases made. - H.S.

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 4% Malbec. For the first time, it includes grapes from our Estate Ramseyer Vineyard which is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from Sheridan Vineyard and Dineen Family Vineyards in Zillah. - the winery

John and Heather Ramseyer fulfilled a lifelong dream when they purchased land in Zillah, Washington. At a thousand foot elevation, this 70 acre former apple orchard was their perfect choice. In 2007, they planted three acres of Cabernet, one acre of Cabernet Franc and one half acre each of Malbec and Merlot. The "Vintage Five" is their fifth wine.
