Ransom is best known for its Ransom Spirits line of distilled grappa and eau de vies. Producer Tad Seestedt was one of the first of a growing number of Portland Oregon based distillers. For tbe Ransom Wine part of the business, Tad produces small batches of site specific Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir. Tad is a creative winemaker, thinking outside the box with his Port (fortified with Gewurztraminer Aquavitae), Botrytised Riesling, Gamay Noir and other wonderfully curiosities. Ransom's wines are hand crafted in a style that emphasizes acidity, purity, structure and length. The ‘Selection’ wines are vintage cuts of the best Pinot Noir barrels and Pinot Gris wines. The Vineyard Designate wines are his best. Tad started Ransom in 1997 as a distillery in Portland, producing grape-based spirits. Tad called his winery “Ransom,” because that’s exactly what he felt like he was paying his lenders in order to start these businesses. Tad has made more wine in the last few vintages, and is becoming known for his well made, classic Pinot noir, with an original twist that makes it different and distinctly his own. Random wines fruit is sourced from organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards and winemaking is pure, minimally mechanized, and instinctively non-interventionist, with juice for the wines typically restricted to free-run (before pressing for spirits). As with his grappas and eau de vies, Tad’s whites are expressively aromatic. The Wines
