Review:

2009 Tanzer - 93+ points - Deep red-ruby. High-pitched, expressive aromas of red cherry, raspberry and black licorice. Smooth, suave and rich on the palate, with highly perfumed notes of exotic flowers and spices. Extremely backward today but boasts outstanding mid-palate energy and lift. Finishes very long, with a piquant note of licorice. This needs a minimum of four or five years of cellaring.

2009 Wine Advocate - 92 points - Dark and brooding, balanced with tart acidity, offering dense plum, currant and licorice flavors that linger on the focused finish. Needs cellaring to bring the elements together. Best from 2014 through 2019. - H.S.

This darkly intense wine opens with aromas of blackberry, gravel, tar and lots of earth but also reveals hints of espresso, vanilla, and Herbes de Provence. The mouthfeel is rich and silky with flavors of dark berries, espresso, bacon fat, spice, even dark chocolate and vanilla. The finish is quite lengthy. This wine will improve over the next dozen years and with proper cellaring should hold for up to 25 years.

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

2008 Wine Advocate - 93 points

- "The 2008 Principia Reserve Syrah (100%) was produced from four superb sites for this varietal and aged in 25% new French oak. Smoked meat, hung game, truffle, black pepper, blueberry, and plum aromas inform the nose of a velvety, ripe, savory Syrah redolent of black fruits, a hint of balsamic, espresso, and a reiteration of the wine’s minerality. It is a world-class Syrah that will evolve for 4-5 years and drink well through 2023+.

The Navarane brothers continue to think outside of the barrel." - Jay Miller

2008 Wine Spectator - 92 points -

Dark, dense and brooding, offering a cauldron of meaty black olive and smoke notes around a deep core of dried cherry and fresh currant flavors. There’s plenty of depth. Just needs to develop some lift. Best from 2013 through 2016. - H.S.
