Review:

Walla Walla Syrah: aromas of cedar, spice, kirsch, lavender, white pepper and dark chocolate. This complex wine then displays flavors of raspberry, spice, blueberry, truffles, scorched earth and kirsch.

As with all Rasa wines, the mouthfeel is rich, the balance is gorgeous, the tannins are soft and smooth and the finish is long and luxurious. It will be hard not to drink it now but it will improve over the next 6 to 8 years and will cellar for up to 20.

"QED" comes from the Latin phrase "quod erat demonstrandum". It literally translates as "which was to be demonstrated." Billo and Pinto define it as "I've proven what I set out to prove." Yes, they have, and spectacularly.

The blend is Syrah (71%), Grenache (14%), Mourvedre (12%) and Viognier (3%).

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

2008 Wine Advocate - 92 points - The 2008 QED was made with 80% native fermentation with the wine then aged for 19 months in 22% new French oak. This year’s blend is 83% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, and 2% Viognier. The Naravane brothers describe 2008 as a cooler year resulting in better acid structure. In this vintage they added a small percentage of stems. The wine is a glass-coating opaque with a splendid bouquet of Asian spices, incense, garrigue notes, black cherry, and blueberry. More high-toned than the 2007 and with a racy personality, on the palate it has plenty of spicy red and black fruits, lots of spice, excellent volume, and enough structure to evolve for 4-5 years. With additional bottle age it should gain considerable complexity, Drink it from 2014 to 2028. - Jay Miller

2008 Wine Spectator - 91 points - Dense and distinctive for its sandalwood, green olive and tobacco overtones surrounding the lean core of blackberry and cherry. Shows intensity and personality. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Drink now through 2015.—H.S.

A bouquet of blackberries, earth, herbs de provence, violet and vanilla with notes of grilled meats. This vintage has a voluptuous mouthfeel.

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

If Rasa Vineyards' PB wines are their introduction, their QED 07 is the center stage, main course, and the star of the show.

The 2007 QED is largely Syrah from two Walla Walla vineyards (Les Collines and Seven Hills) and one Yakima vineyard (Lewis). There's also a small amount of Mourvedre and Grenache from Minik Vineyards in the blend.

Billo and Pinto have taken the finest qualities of Washington State Syrah and tied it up with a bow. A French bow.

How can a wine be so intense and yet so vibrant, so ethereal and entrancing, yet so tied to the earth and the soil and the stones?

While the scent will knock you over with its paean to the beauty of the earth, the flavors are beguiling - dusty black currant and blackberry let the floral, mineral, and earth qualities in the scent show through. Spring water flowing over smooth rocks in a mountain stream is the only way I can describe the finish - "minerality" just doesn't do it justice.

Production will stay small, according to Pinto, and demand is going to be sky high. Try these wines - this is a winery you just HAVE to know.
