Red Splendor is made by David O'Reilly (Owen Roe) for the Northwest Vine Project and his famed attention to quality was clearly applied here. While simple and a bit rough, Red Splendor is a steal of a picnic wine. It is 90% Bordeaux varietals- Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The last 10% is a melange of Zinfandel, Petit Syrah, and Malbec.
The 2005 Red Splendor is the second outing for this brilliant, bombastic compilation of Bordeaux and Mediterranean varieties. The major player here is the Columbia Valley soil, which gives both minerality and muscular backbone to this fruit-driven, full-bodied red.
This wine is part of the NW Vine Project, a group of inexpensive wines made for an Oregon wine distributor. Made by David O'Reilly (Owen Roe, O'Reilly's) and Andrew Rich (Andrew Rich Wines), these are super values and not readily available outside Oregon.
