Review:
Wine Spectator 95 Points
Very engaging. The Viognier component lifts the aromas right out of the glass. This is the most forward of the three Syrahs showing dark, vibrant, sweet black raspberry and liquid stone notes towards the finish. - Marcus
In the Rocks brings together the soft characteristics of Viognier with the Syrah to create wonderful aromatics of truffles, leather, braised meats, Kalamata olives and sweet shortbread cookies. - the winery
2009 Vintage
The 2009 is very limited, call or email to order.
2009 Wine Spectator - 92 points - Firm in texture, with tannins not obtrusive but tightly packed with the dark berry and licorice flavors. Hints at black olive and tar as the finish lingers expressively. Drink now through 2019. - H.S.
Scents of stone, slate, sea salt, dry field herbs - exotically intriguing. Lots of mineral, herb, fresh tobacco, Nicoise olives, plum and berry note in this dense, mouthcoating wine. - Jean
Fascinating beef teriyaki, smoke, and olive aromas mingle with lavender, spices, and sweet red fruits. Benefits from some time in the glass (or decanting), and then rewards with lush dark fruits and a long, long finish. - Adrienne
Violets, a cut field, added plum and black berry fruit, with greater intensity. Dark cherry elements, a touch of strawberry jam, white pepper, a little leather, grilled herb and a hint of brine come together. The even-handed finish rolls. - Marcus
2008 Vintage Tasting Notes
Wine Advocate 95 points - The 2008 In the Rocks with 6% Viognier and 2% Marsanne, gives up alluring notes of roasted meat, bacon, pepper, lavender, and blueberry. Beautifully proportioned, precise and lengthy, this pleasure-bent offering will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2023. All of the Syrahs spent 18 months in barrel with approximately 15% (or less) new oak. - Jay Miller
The In The Rocks Syrah 08 was co-fermented with roughly 6.5% Viognier and 1.5% Marsanne to create a wine that aromatically is bursting with smoke, fresh strawberry, white flowers, hints of burnt sugar, dried lavender and strong meaty flavors throughout.
Concentrated dark fruits in the mouth and a small amount of sea salt give this wine complex flavors and a balanced finish. Very approachable in its youth but we recommend a few years of cellaring for optimal enjoyment. - the winery
2007 Vintage Tasting Notes
Wine Advocate 94 Points - The 2007 In The Rocks Syrah was co-fermented with Viognier. Medium purple-colored, it offers up a sexy perfume of bacon, game, Asian spices, incense, lavender, blueberry, and plum. Dense, rich, and full on the palate, it has the structure to evolve for several years, but a succulent fleshiness makes it approachable now. - Jay Miller
"This Syrah was co-fermented with Viognier, which brings out very floral aromatics as well as enhancing the color of the wine. The wine has a great balance of ripe strawberries, white pepper, dried lavender, and violets. In The Rocks pairs well with a variety of foods, but also stands well on its own. This wine will be very approachable in the first few years, but also will benefit from years of aging." - the winery
"The 2007 Reynvaan In The Rocks Syrah carries Cayuse-like aromas of bacon fat, smoke, licorice, iodine and sea spray. Rich, extracted, its berry, plum and currant fruit is matched with significant flavors of earth, forest floor, herb and bark. The tannins are still a little rough and green, but the stuffing and balance are there to age gracefully." - wine advisor Paul Gregutt, paulgregutt.com
