Ribbon Ridge Winery

Ribbon Ridge Winery is Harry Pedersen Nedry's private label for a special wine that he is making from some of the best grapes grown at Chehalem, where he is co-owner and winemaker. Ribbon RIdge's Pinot noir is made from grapes grown at the Ridgecrest Vineyard, planted in 1980.

Ridgecrest Vineyard

Harry says: "Ribbon Ridge Winery wines will be the best wines we can source from our 164 acre estate, and from the oldest plantings on Ribbon Ridge. They are not designed for a mass market, but for serious aging and for understanding the potential of this special land mass called Ribbon Ridge. Their concentration, their blackness, their elegance, their textural excitement all stem from the vineyard—its maturity; deep penetration of dry-farmed vines to find rock, nutrients and water; organic farming; limited yield and sensitive fermentation to protect vintage characteristics."

Stylistically, the single Pinot noir Harry makes for this label is the masculine counterpart to the choices he makes to compose the archetypal feminine Chehalem Reserve.

Reviews

Wine Advocate (Parker) 93 points: "Medium to dark ruby-colored it offers aromatic as well as flavor profiles packed with lush blackberries, assorted dark fruit, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, this is a big, dense, powerful Pinot of considerable concentration, depth , and length. A slight trace of alcoholic warmth can be discerned in its finish. Projected maturity: 2006-2014. Pierre Rovani."

Burghound 92 points: "Elegant, pure and beautifully detailed high-toned red fruit aromas merge into complex and exceptionally spicy medium full flavors that display under tones of licorice and clove. There is abundant midpalate sap to buffer the robust, powerful and tight tannins yet this is a highly seductive effort as the finish possesses a dust and a velvet quality. This is a first rate effort with outstanding concentration with just a hint of finishing warmth. 92/2008+ Allan Meadows."

Ridgecrest Vineyard

From Pinotfile Newsletter 6/05: "Harry Peterson-Nedry planted grapes on Ribbon Ridge at the extreme, western end of the Chehalem Mountains in 1982 and named the vineyard Ridgecrest Vineyard. This is the first release of Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir from the 37 acre estate, the oldest and best situated plantings on Ribbon Ridge. The 2002 Pinot Noir is Peterson-Nedry’s first private label release. Production was only 250 cases. Both the Wine Advocate and the Burghound rated this release first rate."
