This Rhone-style red flows with spiced plums, sweet raspberries, earth and minerals. It has a bit more flashy fruit in the nose and flavor than its Lawrence Vineyard partner, making it equally appealing to Northwest wine geeks and novices alike. I tasted this without knowing it's price and was shocked (and refreshed!) to find it so reasonable - a great value. - Marcus

It is absolutely thrilling to be the first to write about a new venture that seems to hold immense promise. Among the wineries I have covered early on are Leonetti Cellar, Quilceda Creek, Betz Family, DeLille, Cayuse, K Vintners, Fielding Hills, Beresan, Rulo... Southard has the potential of being that good. - Paul Gregutt

This bone dry, southern Rhône-style red blend consists of 61% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, 12% Cinsault and 9% Counoise. Elegant and detailed flavors of light berry and Bing cherry are dusted with cocoa accents. - Paul Gregutt

Loam, spice, and garrigue surround a core of raspberry. There's a hint of blood orange too. As it opens up it shows its true heart: pure, sweet Grenache fruit. 206 cases produced. - the winery

Sugarloaf Vineyard was established and planted in 2005 by Joe Hattrup. It is located at the far western end of the Yakima Valley in the Rattlesnake Hills. Situated in a unique zone known as Parker Heights, the area is known for its capacity to ripen heat loving soft tree fruit such as peaches and nectarines. Degree days are some of the warmest in the Yakima Valley, affording the opportunity to ripen late season grapes. A very steep south-facing inclination provides good air drainage, a protection from frost damage in the early spring and late fall. The soils vary considerably yet are appropriately suited to each variety. Despite the youth of the vines, the SugarLoaf wines show good structure and intense flavors. Washington Rhone wine maker Doug McCrea anticipates that this vineyard will yield some of the best expressions of Rhône varietals in Washington.

Sugarloaf specializes in Rhone varietals including Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier as well as the Spanish varietal Tempranillo.
