Multifaceted old vine Pinot noir, with superb depth and character. Aromas of rich cherry and berry, with dusky spice, green peppercorns, and violets. Mixed berries swirling around deep black and red cherry, with great depth. The barrel toast melds with the fruit, and mingles with the classic Eola Hills herbal spice note on the finish. The juicy acidity adds a layer of complexity and suggests that this baby needs to occupy your cellar for a year or two, then explode into Oregon Pinot greatness.

St Innocent Anden Vineyard 04 Tasting Notes

A pure, feminine, fascinatingly complex Pinot noir, all sophistication where the Freedom Hill is brooding and muscular, beautiful balance of red fruit,s, floral notes of roses and violets, hints of milk chocolate, nutmeg, cinnamon, fine, fine tannins entwine the ever changing flavors. The 2002 vintage had a Wine Advocate rating of 94 points.

St Innocent Anden Vineyard Pinot noir 03 Tasting Notes

I backed off in the extraction in 2003 in order to balance the tannin extraction with the fruit. This was especially important in 2003, a vintage the produced very structured wines. I especially like the '03 and believe that it is my best effort from this vineyard to date.

The older vines bring greater structure to the 2003 Pinot noir, Anden Vineyard. Wild, black fruit, spice, and pepper aromas are reflected onto the palate. The tannins are substantial and are in harmony with the powerful fruit. The '03 Anden will certainly benefit from extended aging and will improve for at least 12 years. - the winery

St Innocent Anden Vineyard Pinot noir 02

The older vines bring greater structure to the 2002 Pinot noir, Anden Vineyard. Wild, black fruit, spice, and pepper aromas are reflected onto the palate. The tannins are substantial and are in harmony with the powerful fruit.

The 2002 Pinot noir, Anden Vineyard was not released with the other fall wines. I felt that its richer structure would benefit from several more months of bottle age. When I was visited by Pierre Rovani of THE WINE ADVOCATE, I did not show the wine, thus it was not included in the review.

I believe that the '01 and '02 Pinot noir, Seven Springs closely resemble the previous Seven Springs vineyard wines. The 2002 Pinot noir, Anden reflects a different terroir - one with more intensity and wildness. The Anden vineyard wines will certainly benefit from extended aging and will improve for at least 12 years. - the winery

St Innocent Anden Vineyard 01 Tasting notes

This Pinot noir is very deep purple-red hue. Its nose is dominated by wild, black fruits, and has significant hints of pumpkin pie spice and white pepper. Highly recommended, this wine is very structured, with powerful tannins that have softened over the last four years of aging at the winery, are well integrated into spice and a restrained black fruit palate.

Open and drinking beautifully in March 2005, this Pinot has significant hints of pumpkin pie spice and white pepper. This is wine for game and wild mushrooms - those wild and earthy flavors in the food bring out all the layers in this wine.

Anden Vineyard (formerly part of Seven Springs Vineyard) overlooks the fertile Willamette Valley from its position in the hills west of Salem. Growing on a steep southeast slope, the vines are protected from maritime winds by a fold in the hills. The vineyard was planted in 1982 on Jory soil, a shallow clay over fractured rock, at an elevation of 400'.

The grapes were fermented in a small tank after three days of cold maceration. The wine aged for 19 months in 50% new French oak barrels and was bottled without fining or filtration. A small amount of sediment may accumulate during the aging process and is normal for wine produced in this manner.

Winemaker Notes

With the 2001 vintage, our Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot noir has changed. Until 2001, St. Innocent was the only winery to produce a Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot noir from both the original lower block of grapes and the upper block planted in 1998. In 2001, the vineyard was legally divided into two separate properties. The upper block will be called Seven Springs and the lower, Anden Vineyard. From what was one wine, there are now two different vineyard designate wines.

The vines are 20 years old, quite old by Oregon standards. Anden Pinot noir is the most intense and concentrated of all the 2001 Pinot noirs. It is also the most layered, complex, and nuanced of the St. Innocent Pinot noirs. This wine will develop dramitically with long term aging - and will still be young and developing after 10 years.
