Review:

2008 Wine Enthusiast - 91 points This Red Mountain selection, among a quartet of superb vineyard reserves from Tamarack, is the most shuttered. This has excellent structure, with hints of well-rounded red fruit, baking spice and a gentle dusting of cocoa, which all point to its long-term aging potential. Cellar Selection. - Paul Gregutt

Dark and chocolatey, spiced with pretty notes of allspice and clove, this wine is round and rich, bursting with ripe berries, combined with an earthy complexity and a velvety finish. - the winery

When wine experts consider Washington State's great vineyards, one name that consistently appears near the top of any list is Ciel du Cheval Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA. Famed for the elegance and complexity of the wines it produces, Ciel du Cheval and its owner Jim Holmes have become near-legendary exemplars of what Washington wine is all about.

The desirability of fruit from Ciel du Cheval can be seen in the names of the wineries that produce wine from the vineyard. Culling through a client list that includes 25 producers in Washington and Oregon reveals some of the Northwest's most prestigious labels: Fidelitas, Mark Ryan, Quilceda Creek, Andrew Will, McCrea Cellars, Cadence, Betz Family . . . among others.

"It's great to have such a positive reputation," admits Jim Holmes. "But it's one of those things that feels temporary because there's always the next guy coming up around the corner somewhere!"

But what isn't temporary at Ciel du Cheval are the two ingredients of success that Holmes feels are critical. "Dirt and climate, climate and dirt," is his mantra.

The Owner & Winemaker

Tamarack Cellars is owned and operated by Ron, and his wife, Jamie Coleman. Ron serves as manager and winemaker while Jamie is kept busy as a full time Ophthalmologist in private practice and mother of three daughters.

Ron began his career in the wine business in Seattle as a wine wholesaler. Upon Jamie’s medical school graduation and a subsequent move for residency to Milwaukee, WI, Ron shifted gears and worked as a sommelier at the Pfister Hotel and as a retail wine store manager. In 1993, they moved to Walla Walla so Jamie could be a small town Doc and Ron could learn to make wine. After some stints as a cellar rat at Waterbrook and then Canoe Ridge, the next step was their own winery.

Tamarack was founded in 1998 at the airport in an old World War II Fire Station where it still is today. The rest, as they say, is history.

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

2007 Wine Advocate - 91 points - The 2007 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Reserve is made up of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 28% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. Purple in color, it exhibits a nose of pain grille, mineral, violets, incense, and brooding black fruits. On the palate the Red Mountain tannins are well-tamed, leaving layered fruit, a plush palate feel, loads of spice, and a wine with plenty of volume and impeccable balance. Give it 3-4 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2027. - Jay Miller
