Very few $24 Pinots are worthy of inclusion in our Reserve Pinot Noir Club. But as we wrote in our email feature on Thomas Gerrie Pinot noir 2010, this is a reserve-level Pinot without the price tag.

Thomas Gerrie was last year's breakthrough hit. It was the most re-ordered and requested wine of the year, so much so that we've been asking (impatiently) about the 2010 release for months. Andy and I got word that it was ready to go, so we hopped in the car and drove to Cristom to meet Tom. Quick refresher: Thomas (Tom) is CrisTOM - his father, Paul, founded the winery. Tom works alongside Cristom's revered winemaker, Steve Doerner, and you can sense the stylistic influence of Tom's time in Cristom's cellar.

Filled with aromatic intrigue, 2010 is easily the best smelling vintage of the last decade. Cherries, baking and cola spices, a sweet/tart interplay of currants and blueberries, persistence and intensity combined with subtlety and elegance. Let's cut to the chase: this is reserve-level Pinot noir without the price tag, and we recommend it wholeheartedly.

An equal-parts blend of fruit from 3 vineyards, all Pommard clone: Eileen (Cristom's highest-elevation estate vineyard), Illahe (one of our favorites), and Feltz (right around the corner from Cristom, planted in 1978).

Production was way down for the 2010 vintage, so the window for acquiring the 2010 is considerably narrower. Thanks to your support, we have a generous allocation but equally rabid demand. Try your bottle from the club shipment ASAP - we think you'll want more.

The Thomas Gerrie Pinot noir is a fantastic "insider" Pinot deal. With its pedigree (Cristom) and price ($24!), and most importantly its tastiness, we recommend it by the case without reservation.

Seriously, we're going to keep the flowery prose short and say that this red cherry and baking spice-packed Oregon Pinot is the steal of the season, if not the year.
